WORKSHOP INFO
Cultivating Healthy Adult Relationships in the Montessori Prepared Environment
A healthy and positive working relationship between all adults is a crucial aspect of the Montessori prepared environment. Yet all too often we don’t have the time, training or energy to cultivate and honor this special relationship. This online workshop is focused on learning how to build a foundation rooted in respect and communication between the lead teacher and assistants. We will discuss how following the four agreements (and more!) can optimize the health and well-being of all the adults caring for the young child during the first 6 years of life.

"All that humans can do with their discoveries depends on the conscience of who uses them. But this energy of love is given to us so that each shall have it in ourselves. Although the amount given to us is limited and diffused, it is the greatest of all the forces at our disposal. That part of it which we possess consciously is renewed every time a baby is born and, even if circumstances at a later stage cause it to become dormant, we still feel for it a fervent desire. Therefore, we must study it and use it, more than any of the other forces that surround us, because it is not lent to the environment, as these are, but is lent to us.

The study of love and its utilization will lead us to the source from which it springs, The Child.

This is the path that we must follow in our anguish and our cares if, as our aspirations direct, we wish to reach salvation and the union of humankind."

We are deep into the oppositional phase of development over here, where movement, exploration, efforts to communicate and the quest for independence are priority number one for this almost 15 month old.

With this -what we AtoI folks call the "crisis of self affirmation" - my days could easily be spent telling her no-don't-stop.

Instead, I (as much as possible) tell her what she can do.

And the results are incredible.

When I tell her:
"Don't touch the trash."
What does she do?

She gets into or tries to get into the trash.

When I tell her:
"This is the trashcan. Let's see if we can find a piece of trash to put into it."
What does she do?

She finds a piece of trash, puts it in the can and moves on - satisfied.

Young children want nothing more than to take part in life being lived. They are not destructive by nature, they are curious. And they want to feel like a valued member of their home or school communities.

They want to know how things work.
They want hands-on experiences.
They want to know what they can do.

Save those no-don't-stops for when you really need them, ie safety/danger and get creative. When you're about to say no-don't-stop, pause and listen to your child you to:

"Tell me what I can do."

I promise it's worth it.

note:
a young child wants are a young childs needs

young child = 0-3yo

AtoIers = Assistant to Infancy, the Association Montessori Internationale equivalent of an Infant/Toddler training.

I talk about the oppositional phase of development, communication AND MORE in my upcoming webinar series. 🔗 in bio or radiclebeginnings.com to learn more.

My husband and I were talking about how Edie, at 13mo, is rapidly approaching the age of self-affirmation, the crisis of opposition, the "I do it"/"I need help"/"I don't want your help"/"I can only be obedient to my inner drive" phase - and where I think the (insulting) label of "terrible twos" comes from.

Around this time, the young child is becoming increasingly more independent, while still dependent on the adult. This can cause conflict between child & adult, especially when the adult is unaware of this important developmental phase.

To enjoy this time, we need tools.

Tools to set limits.
Tools to communicate.
Tools to remain patient.
Tools that empower the child.
And tools to just get s**t done.

Choices are one of these valuable tools.

We have been giving Edie choices since birth. Now, we're going to kick it into high gear, especially regarding limits and boundaries.

And as my husband and I were continuing to talk about this phase of development and what it entails he was like:

"Oh, so the choices are the boundaries."

And I was like:

YES. Exactly.

The choices are the boundaries, from my wise husband, .
(he also coined "taco-cino" for the topponcino iykyk)

-fyi this is something I go into detail about in my 'navigating power struggles' webinar-

In Maria Montessori’s observation and work with children she discovered early on that asking a child a question that they do not know the answer to, or can't answer, is not what encourages a love of learning. Engaging a child, providing knowledge/information purposefully and developing confidence is what encourages this lifelong love.

From there the Three Period Lesson was developed, a method used on all levels (birth and onwards) in Montessori spaces. This lesson is used to introduce new concepts and valuable lessons that can easily be implemented in any school or home setting.

We know the child is constantly absorbing language and how to communicate - from 7 months in utero this typically begins! Even before the child is able to speak, they understand the words (receptive language) of their community and culture. Amazing!

It's also perfect for introducing seasonal celebrations. I always kept baskets of fall produce (some edible, some not) on our shelves in the Toddler Community. In conjunction with seasonal activities (like washing pumpkins or picking squash seeds), the children had the opportunity to learn the names and interact with these real objects whenever they were called to do so.

Oh the joy of learning and celebrating and constructing the self.

I’m convinced that she and I would have been good friends. Or maybe we already were in a past life. Either way, I am so grateful for Maria and the movement she started. Education is our salvation.
