Day #001 of our “What did you learn”
This is Zeb helping move some yearlings to some different areas. His job is to bend them to the right for me. He is 1 1/2 old with maybe 70 days on him. I know what we need to work on but what does everyone else see?

What does responsible breeding look like behind the cute puppy pictures? 🧬🐾

We share lots of adorable puppy pictures around here ~ because let’s face it, who doesn’t love a Border Collie puppy? ❤️ But there is a whole lot of thought, work and expense that happens before those puppies are ever born.

One part of our breeding program is DNA health testing our breeding dogs.

Our dogs receive comprehensive genetic testing that screens for hundreds of genetic variants and inherited health conditions. We aren’t simply looking at whether two dogs are pretty or whether they both work cattle. We use those results to help us make educated decisions about which dogs should be bred together and what could potentially be passed on to their puppies.

For example, our genetic health report alone is 26 pages long. The results screen for conditions affecting the eyes, nervous system, immune system, blood, muscles, metabolism and more, including conditions important in Border Collies such as Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome (TNS) and MDR1 Medication Sensitivity.

And page after page of the health results reads the same way:

0 copies — CLEAR. 💚

DNA testing is only one piece of our program. We also consider working ability, stock sense, temperament, structure, intelligence, biddability and the traits we have seen through generations of these working dogs.

Our Border Collies aren’t being produced simply because we wanted puppies. We breed with a purpose: healthy, capable, intelligent working dogs that can go from being part of the family to putting in a real day’s work on the ranch.

And then those babies get something no DNA test can provide — they are raised right alongside us in a real ranch environment, surrounded by livestock, working dogs and everyday ranch life. 🐂🌲

So when you see those sweet little puppy faces on our page, just know there is a whole lot more behind them than cute.

Genetics. Proven working ability. Temperament. Purpose. And generations of good working dogs.

That’s what we’re proud to put behind the Big Circle Livestock name. 🤎🐾

We sure are blessed. 🤎🌲

Summers look a little different for us these days, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Every summer we get to trade the desert heat for the cool Arizona pines and head up to cow camp for the season. Our days are filled with cattle, horses, working dogs, long days, cool mornings and all the everyday work that comes with ranch life.

This year has been a little extra special with a whole litter of Border Collie pups being born and raised right here at cow camp. 🐾 They’re getting their start surrounded by cattle, working dogs and the sights and sounds of a real working ranch, just like we like it.

It’s hard work, it’s dusty, and there’s always another job waiting…but when you look around at those pine trees and realize this gets to be our summer every year, you can’t help but feel incredibly blessed.

Cool mountain mornings, cattle to tend, good dogs beside us and another summer at cow camp. Life is pretty darn good. 🤎🌲🐂

Meet Boone 💙 — Dad to Our Current Litter

There are Border Collies… and then there are the ones that remind you why ranch families keep these dogs around generation after generation.

This is Boone, sire to our current litter and a full Border Collie who has been an incredible dog for our family.

Boone comes from strong working bloodlines, and he has the kind of work ethic we value here at Big Circle Livestock — grit, instinct, intelligence, and a willingness to work. He’s a real ranch dog, bred for a job and used in the kind of environment these dogs were meant for.

But one of the things we’re probably proudest of isn’t something we can say about Boone ourselves — it’s what we hear from the people who have his pups.

We’ve had clients take home a Boone pup, raise and work that dog, and then come back wanting another Boone pup. To us, that says an awful lot about what he’s passing on.

We don’t raise Border Collies just because they’re pretty dogs. We appreciate the brains, natural ability, work ethic and strong ranch bloodlines behind them — dogs that can become useful partners while still being the kind you love having around at the end of the day.

And yes… Boone happens to be pretty darn handsome, too. 😉💙

Anybody local been looking for a good Border Collie? 🐾

Here at Big Circle Livestock, we raise and train Border Collies to work on the ranch and livestock, and our newest litter has a few pups that will be available to new homes.

These babies were born July 13th, are full Border Collies, have been wormed twice, and will be ready to go the first week of September. We have both boys and girls available, and at almost four weeks old their personalities are already starting to show. ❤️

And this little guy is definitely one to watch! Ace is a full Border Collie and is officially looking for his new home. 🐾

Born July 13th, Ace will be 4 weeks old tomorrow. He’s already been wormed twice and will be ready to head to his new home the first week of September.

Ace is very lightly marked right now, but we expect he will more than likely blue merle out like his dad as he grows. 💙🤍 It’ll be fun to watch his color develop!

This handsome little guy is Walt, a full Border Collie, and he is officially looking for his new home! 🐾

Born July 13th, Walt will be 4 weeks old tomorrow. He’s already been wormed twice and will be ready to head to his new home the first week of September.

Walt has much less white than some of his littermates, giving him that gorgeous mostly-black look. 🖤 We can’t wait to watch this boy grow!
