In 2013, Concrete School District partnered with United General District 304’s Community Health Outreach department to launch a Farm to School program as a strategy to improve nutrition and access to healthy foods in Eastern Skagit County. Concrete Farm to School seeks to address challenges facing the small, rural town of Concrete by educating children and the community about healthy eating, local food, and gardening.

Meet our new(ish) Farm to School AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates, Miriam, Elsie, Anja, and Karley! They are spending ten weeks as Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) with United General District 304, focusing on Conrete and Sedro-Woolley Farm to School, tending gardens, providing programming for youth, harvesting produce, and attending outreach events. We're so glad to have their help this summer and are enjoying learning alongside them!

If you know a kid who need something fun to do in August, make sure they join us for Concrete Summer Leadership Adventure with Concrete Resource Coalition and Concrete Farm to School Program! Good food, good trails, and good friends!

This August, Concrete Farm to School, Glacier Peak Institute, and Concrete Hiking and Biking Club are partnering to offer an exciting eight-day summer camp for youth aged 12-15. Give your teen the chance to connect with friends, explore local hikes near Baker Lake, and enjoy hands-on activities in our school gardens. Tomorrow is the master gardener’s plant fair at the Skagit County fairgrounds from 8 AM to 2 PM. Our farm to school booth is right at the main entrance. come and pick out some flowers and vegetables and make a donation to support Concrete students. We have 200 tomato plants (8 varieties) as well as hot and sweet pepper plants! Hope to see you tomorrow! But don't worry if you couldn't make it yesterday- we still have lots of plants and you can come get them at the Skagit County Master Gardener Plant Fair on Saturday from 8-2 at the Skagit County Fairgrounds! Our booth will be just inside the main entrance- you can't miss it!

Do you know a recent (or soon-to-be) high school graduate who needs a summer plan? Farm to School/United General District 304 is recruiting a team of motivated individuals to serve as AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates this summer. Interested individuals need to be 18 by June 15, available to serve 40 hours/week for 10 weeks, and experience with Farm to School or agriculture is an asset.
