KS CCL Instructor
NRA Basic Pistol Instructor

About:
While being an avid lifelong hunter and a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006-07, when Ryan truly entered the civilian firearm training community in 2018, he quickly realized there was a lack of quality training available locally. Much of his early marksmanship skills were

gained from learning a number of shooting drills available at that time via YouTube, however this is far from the most efficient way for the new shooter to learn marksmanship fundamentals, and lacks the one on one interaction with a qualified instructor necessary to learn defensive shooting. He attended his first formal firearm training the following year at the Active Self Protection National Conference, and founded Turkey Creek Tactical, LLC in 2020. He has since become an NRA Basic Pistol instructor, Kansas CCL instructor, and in April 2024 attended Tom Givens’ Rangmaster Firearm Instructor Development Course to become a Rangemaster Certified Instructor. He always seeks to be a student and attends training as frequently as possible. In March 2025, he plans to attend Ed Monk’s Active Shooter Response Instructor course. Ryan specializes primarily in pistol training, but is also well versed in defensive shotgun and carbine as well. He has trained with nationally known instructors, including:
-Tom Givens - Rangemaster - Rangemaster Instructor Development
-Adam Winch - Defender’s USA - Defenders Series, Fighting Rifle
-John Correia/Neil Weidener - Active Self Protection - Church Safety, Defensive Shotgun
-Chuck Haggard - Agile Training & Consulting
-Brian Hill - The Complete Combatant
-Riley Bowman - Pistol Intelligence
-Dave Laird - Dynamic Combative Solutions
-AJ Zito - Practical Performance
-Paul Carlson - Safety Solutions Academy
-Chris Cypert - Citizens Defense Research
-Russell Anthon - Defenders USA - Long Range Precision

We have another class coming up in two weeks.

This is a valid article. I have had various women mention all of these issues to me. Each one made me think of a concept Dr. William T. Aprill mentioned to me. It's one of his underappreciated gems; "That's not me."

I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels. For the last two and a half years, I’ve had to do so on a bi weekly basis due to my primary business requiring me to travel. This is mostly in a medium sized city for Kansas/Oklahoma, and I stick to mostly the relatively inexpensive places that cater to transient workers. No big deal. Until this morning.

I’ve been staying at this particular hotel for over a year now with regularity. They know me at the desk. This week I just had one night scheduled there. At 6:45 am, I am standing between the TV stand and bed, with one leg in my jeans when there is a “whooshing” kind of sound and the curtain starts flailing. I most assuredly was thinking “what the f*ck”, until a head comes around the side of the curtain. I lock eyes with this middle age man and I’m sure I had a huge look of disbelief on my face. My pistol is on the table, well within arm’s reach. This man very quickly starts saying, “sorry, sorry, sorry!” as he exits the window and closes it. I get my pants on and go to investigate the window. I find that the latches are broken, there’s a crack in the window itself, and it won’t shut all the way, which also explains why it was chilly when I woke up.

Normally, I don’t go to the desk to check out, but management needs to be aware of this. It didn’t really register as having been as potentially dangerous until I was about to exit the room with my things. I called my wife to talk it out for a minute before going to the desk. The manager apologized profusely, immediately refunded my stay, and informed me they had had a squatter(s) in the area. They were immediately looking for said individual, and were going to get on repairing the window ASAP. It was a profuse relief in that moment to know it was most likely someone homeless looking for a warm spot. None the less, from now on, I will be checking all hotel windows to ensure they are properly locked.

Photo is from the outside of the cracked open window.

I tell all my student that come through a CCL class that cops have the right to disarm you during an interaction, but concealed carry has been around long enough to generally not not be an issue. However, there are the cases that I am wholly wrong, as is this case in Florida. I hope the article is correct and policy is that if a citizen is carrying legally, they are not to be disarmed unnecessarily.

Officer Mindy Cardwell was "working in an off-duty capacity" during the incident.
