✏️ Bubble Tot Back to School Safety Tip ✏️
Before your child buckles up, have them take their backpack off!
Why? A bulky backpack can change how the seat belt fits against their body and may keep the belt from sitting where it’s designed to sit. For proper belt fit, the lap belt should lie low across the hips and the shoulder belt should cross the center of the chest and shoulder.
And once that backpack comes off, don’t leave it loose in the vehicle. Place it on the floor, secure it in the cargo area, or otherwise keep it from becoming a projectile during a sudden stop or crash.
If your child is still riding in a harnessed car seat, the same idea applies: remove bulky items that interfere with a snug harness fit and always follow your car seat manufacturer’s instructions.
A tiny change that helps their restraint do its job properly. 💙

That’s how hot this vehicle became during our seat check event on Saturday. The outside temperature never even reached 80°F.
Meanwhile, much of the Bay Area is experiencing a significant heat wave this week, with heat advisories in effect and triple-digit temperatures expected across many inland communities. If a vehicle can reach 174°F on a day like ours, imagine how quickly temperatures can become deadly during extreme heat.
One of the biggest myths I hear is, “I’d never forget my child.”
Neither did the families whose lives were forever changed by these tragedies. 💔
The American Academy of Pediatrics reminds us that these incidents can happen to loving, attentive caregivers during periods of stress, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, or a change in routine. This isn’t about how much someone loves their child. It’s about understanding how the human brain can fail under certain circumstances so we can build habits that protect our children.
Please make it a habit to check your back seat before locking your vehicle. Lock your car, even inside your own garage. Keep your keys out of children’s reach. And if you ever see a child alone in a vehicle, call 911 immediately.
Love isn’t what prevents these tragedies.
Habits do. Systems do. Reminders do.
