Shaker Road School Shaker Road School is an independent school located in Concord, New Hampshire. Our year-round day program features programs for Infants through Ninth Grade.

Patricia and Douglas Hicks established Shaker Road School (SRS) in 1979, to meet the social and educational needs of a growing population of preschool children from ages two through six years in Concord, New Hampshire. The Hicks family recognized that early childhood education is critical to the future academic and social success of all students…and that there were very few preschool programs available within their own community. Their awareness of the fundamental academic needs of young preschoolers combined with a nurturing and caring environment propelled the school to grow at a rapid pace. SRS started with only six children, and rapidly grew to expand its reach through ninth grade. Its continued success is based upon its ability to adjust to the changing needs of children and families, as well as adaptations in new teaching methods and practices that help foster creativity and academic success in an individually oriented, yet challenging curriculum. The school resides on a beautiful campus of 63 acres enabling students to experience not only academic excellence, but a love and appreciation for the outdoors. In addition to its traditional education program, the campus facilities also support a summer camp, music programs, 6-hole golf course, extensive playgrounds, swimming pools, nature trails, an ice skating pond, and numerous other resources.

Improvisational Acting is one of the enrichment classes offered to our Middle School students. The class started off the year learning and practicing the key principle of “Yes, and…” to build the idea of teamwork between actors on the stage.

Students are learning to listen and respond to their teammates to help develop the story and create conflict between characters. They’re also exploring how to use their whole bodies—not just their words—to communicate with the audience. For example, they might think about how their characters walk, eat, react with surprise, sit, or lift a heavy object.

The class plays improv games like Party Quirks, This is Not a Pen, Sorry I’m Late, and Questions Only to have fun and learn how to be someone else on stage without a script.

Our Eighth Grade Leadership Program is designed to teach students about important leadership principles while giving them opportunities to practice these principles throughout the year.

The program kicks off with a retreat in September, lead by Mrs. Migdal and Mr. Curry. Group sessions focused on different types of power, leadership styles, building consensus, and effective communication. Many of the sessions incorporated challenges that required the students to work together and apply what they were learning, with time afterwards to reflect on their learning and the challenges they faced. The class showed tremendous grace and care for one another as they worked through both successes and failures.

A highlight of this year’s retreat was a surprise pre-dawn trip across the state to watch the sunrise—and enjoy some really good breakfast sandwiches (and good coffee for the teachers)!

The class set a goal for the year and has already begun putting it into action. Their teachers frequently catch them revisiting their retreat experiences and brainstorming ways to bring their goal to life. We’ve seen them practicing genuine kindness and leadership with younger students across campus.

We are proud to call the Class of 2027 our student leaders and look forward to all they will accomplish this year!

Thank you to the 423 grandparents and grandfriends who joined us from near and far on Grandparents Day! We absolutely love having you on campus, and it is such a joy to witness the love and support you show your grandchildren!

We kicked off the celebration with a light breakfast generously provided by the SRS PTG and the Sagris family! After a warm welcome from Principal Dr. Matt and PTG President Julie D’Alessandro, Kindergarten through Eighth Grade students performed songs for a packed audience under the tent. Afterwards, grandparents and grandfriends dispersed to classrooms to spend time with their grandchildren, tour classrooms, and participate in activities together.

After a busy day of learning, students dive into after-academics activities that give them opportunities to have fun with friends, explore their interests, and try new things.

In September, the Farm & Friends group spent time outside learning about goats, including their diet, care, and training. The group is hoping to spend some time in Doug’s greenhouse this month.

The Art group got creative with dot painting, tissue paper art, fuse beads, and other hands-on projects.

The STEAM group was all about creating, experimenting, and having fun! Students made air squishies, paper fidgets, and ice cream cones using paper and balloons.

The Building group took on LEGO creations and building challenges, while the Makerspace students used their imaginations to transform everyday materials into something unique.

Marie’s Pre-K students are getting their raised garden beds ready for winter! They’re also busy drying apple seeds in their Science Area and will soon collect and dry pumpkin seeds from their October jack-o’-lanterns.

This spring, the students will plant their seeds indoors before transplanting them outside, along with wildflower seeds to bring even more color to the garden. Through these hands-on experiences, our students explore how living things grow and build an early foundation in life science and scientific inquiry!
