Your oyster run just got a lot shorter—and downtown Lafayette might never be the same.

Forget the Bridge commute: Hog Island Oyster Co. is taking over the old Barranco at 3596 Mt. Diablo Blvd, promising an early-2027 opening with 130 seats (40 on a new patio), a full seafood menu, and cocktails poured all day. It’s the Bay Area’s top shuck spot’s first East Bay bar—no more Ferry Building lines for Sweetwaters.

Five days left to keep your lightning-fast Petco run on Ygnacio Valley and Oak Grove. On Sept. 21, the store that’s anchored The Orchards for nearly ten years shuts its doors.

That corner was the ultimate one-stop for dog food, kitty litter and a quick Safeway dash. Now you’ll have to carve out extra time—or find a new go-to.

That six-foot fence you trust? It’s no match for a hungry coyote.

A Walnut Creek neighbor let their small dog out back—fenced yard, all safe, right? Then a coyote jumped the barrier and killed their pet.

We live cheek-by-jowl with Shell Ridge, Sugarloaf and Lime Ridge, where coyotes have hunted long before our homes went up. Now, late summer into fall, pups born in spring are big enough to hunt solo—and they’re bold.

One street swallowed up 15% of all police calls last week.

If you live, work or shop downtown, that matters. From Sept 6–12 our officers handled 462 calls—but 71 of them were on North Main. On the 1800 block alone they took six theft reports.

And get this: 1 in 8 calls ended up being false alarms or 911 hang-ups. That’s patrol cars chasing nothing.

• 58 false alarms/911 hang-ups (12%)
• 128 calls between 4–7 pm (25% of weekly volume)

That fortress-like fare gate at Walnut Creek station? It’s cut crime against riders by two-thirds.

One year after BART installed its Next Generation Fare Gates at all 50 stations, crime against riders per million trips is down 67% — and more of us are still riding. Police and safety delays have dropped 47%, too, freeing officers up for real emergencies.

Our commutes are now part of a county-wide surveillance network. It’s not just about catching crooks. It’s about how much of your life you’re handing over to data logs.

As we juggle sky-high rents and endless traffic, our City Council just quietly more than doubled their own pay.

They say it’s to keep up with inflation. But while parents struggle with daycare and small businesses fight rising costs, this move feels like insiders padding their wallets first.

• Old pay: $650/month → New pay: $1,600/month
• First raise since 2002 (24 years ago)
• Vote was 5-0, no dissent
• Takes effect December 2026, after the next election
• Nearby cities: Concord/Pittsburg/Antioch pay $1,900; Lafayette and Orinda pay $0

This isn’t a minor tweak—it’s a loud statement that Council priorities can put themselves before the people who actually live here.
