📚 We are strengthening literacy instruction and building educator capacity one training at a time.

Supporting professionals who work with children who are deaf and hard of hearing is at the heart of what we do.

This month, our Director for Professional Outreach, Michelle Andros, had the opportunity to connect with educators through two professional learning experiences focused on literacy and communication support.

On July 8th, she presented “Make It, Take It: Lessons for Every Strand of the Reading Rope” in coordination with the PA-ECC-DHH (Pennsylvania Expanded Core Competencies for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students) through PaTTAN https://www.pattan.net/Training/Conferences

Participants explored:
• Key literacy concepts, including the Science of Reading, Simple View of Reading, Structured Literacy, and Scarborough’s Reading Rope
• How the Deaf Reading Rope compares to Scarborough’s Reading Rope
• Practical strategies for creating engaging literacy lessons using accessible, creative materials.

We were also excited to recognize a dedicated professional by awarding Korryn Bogdan, a Pennsylvania Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a complimentary course of her choice!

On July 15th, Michelle provided Visual Phonics training for teachers and speech and language pathologists in a local school district as they prepared to support a new student. Visual Phonics must be taught by a credentialed trainer to maintain fidelity and effectiveness and we're proud to provide this specialiezed training to professionals who support students with hearing differences.

A DHH student’s IEP goals should be individualized to how that student communicates: because 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿.

That means the goals for a student who uses ASL look different from the goals for a student who uses Listening and Spoken Language, which look different again from the goals for a student who uses a combination of modalities. And 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙙𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙪𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩.

When goals are written without that specificity, progress monitoring becomes difficult, annual review conversations become vague, and families have trouble understanding what growth actually looks like for their child.

𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗛𝗛-𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗜𝗘𝗣 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴:
- 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭 in the student's current communication modality, named explicitly, not implied.
- 𝘜𝘴𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴, not just standardized test scores, as the starting point.
- 𝘞𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴, classrooms, peer interactions, and home, not only pull-out sessions.
- 𝘐𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘦 𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺-𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 of each goal, so parents understand what they're looking for at home.

𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨! 𝙏𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘿𝙚𝙖𝙛 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘿𝙃𝙃-𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘 𝙜𝙤𝙖𝙡 𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙄𝙀𝙋 they're part of because the goals set the direction for everything that follows.

Our Ed Aud Assistant is the organizational powerhouse behind so much of what we do! From keeping our team and partner districts on track to troubleshooting equipment and managing our ever-growing loaner inventory, she helps keep everything running smoothly.

Come see what we did this weekend at Spring Camp Cheerio!

This year’s theme was barn yard bash and we had a rootin’-tootin’ good time. From canoeing and campfires to meaningful conversations, learning opportunities, and unforgettable memories, this weekend brought together families, children, and professionals in a supportive and welcoming community centered around connection, communication, advocacy, and growth.

Rachel Parkington from Hear to Learn had the opportunity to present on self-advocacy and hearing technology the weekend. It was truly an honor to share, learn, and work alongside such incredible families and dedicated professionals.

A weekend full of laughter, learning, and lifelong memories.

May is National Speech-Language and Hearing Month and we are so excited to celebrate!

This photo says it all. Behind every student with hearing or listening differences is an educational audiologist working to make sure they don’t just show up to school; they can actually access it.

That presentation on the screen? It was put together in collaboration with a Teacher of the Deaf, showing families and professionals what sounds a second grader with a hearing difference has access to based on their audiogram.

This is what educational audiology looks like. It’s teamwork. It’s advocacy. It’s making sure all students have full language access no matter what that looks like for them.

All month long we’ll be sharing tips for teachers, resources for parents, and a behind-the-scenes look at the work we do every day in schools.

Follow along and share this with someone who didn’t know school audiologists exist.
