Classroom to Community: Where It Starts → Where It Grows

What starts as one opportunity can grow into something much bigger.

We recently heard from an educator:
“Third annual hackathon is underway tonight! Chaperoning 40 kids—and it all started with a grant from CCEF!”

One classroom grant sparked an idea.
That idea became an experience.
And now—it’s a tradition.

Three years later, students are still showing up, collaborating, problem-solving, and building the skills they’ll carry into their futures.

That’s the power of investing in classrooms.

It doesn’t just create a moment.
It builds momentum.

This is why we do this work.

What does real-world learning look like?

At Harrisburg Elementary School, it looks like students in the garden—planting basil, zucchini, and squash… learning about sunlight and plant cycles… and even adapting when unexpected 90-degree weather causes crops to change course.

Because that’s the lesson.

Not everything grows as planned—but students are learning to think critically, problem-solve, and adapt in real time.

These are the skills that matter far beyond the classroom.

We’re proud to support experiences like this—where learning is hands-on, meaningful, and connected to the world around us.

And that's a wrap on our 25-26 school year Book-a-Palooza season. We were so happy to bring this event to Carl A. Furr Elementary School with the support of Lilly. We distributed over 1400 books, but seeing all of the smiling faces is what truly matters!

Getting kids into reading isn’t just about school performance-it shapes how they think, communicate, and understand the world. A few big reasons it matters:

It builds their brain early.
Reading strengthens vocabulary, memory, and comprehension. Kids who read regularly tend to develop stronger language skills, which affects everything from writing to problem-solving.

It improves focus and patience.
Books require sustained attention in a way short videos don’t. That ability to sit with something, follow a narrative, and think deeply carries over into academics and real-life tasks.

It boosts imagination and creativity.
When kids read, they create the world in their heads. That’s very different from passively watching a screen—it actively exercises imagination.

It helps emotional intelligence.
Stories expose kids to different perspectives and situations. They learn empathy by seeing the world through other characters’ eyes.
It supports academic success (without feeling like work).
Strong readers tend to perform better across subjects—not just in English, but also in science and math, because they can understand instructions and concepts more easily.

It creates a lifelong skill and habit.
If kids learn to enjoy reading early, it becomes a tool they can use forever—for learning, relaxation, and even stress relief.
It offers a healthy alternative to screens.
Reading can balance out time spent on phones or tablets, giving their brains a different kind of stimulation.

Sometimes the impact of a classroom lasts far beyond the school year…

Recently, a Community for Classrooms 50/50 Raffle winner chose to donate their winnings back to CCEF. What makes this moment even more special? Years ago, they were one of our classroom grant recipients.

Their project, Curled Up Comfy with a Book, helped create a space where students could feel comfortable, stay engaged, and build a love for reading. Today, that same educator is giving back to ensure current students and teachers have access to those same opportunities.

That’s the power of community.
That’s the power of investing in education.

Because of supporters like this, we’re able to continue funding programs in literacy, STEM CONNECT, and educator support and recognition—helping students thrive today and preparing them for tomorrow.

We were so happy to be back at Wolf Meadow Elementary this morning. Another successful Book-a-Palooza happened with the help of volunteers and the financial support of the Mebane Foundation.

Today is International Children's Book Day — and we couldn’t agree more with U.S. Department of Education: literacy truly starts at home, often with a child’s favorite book.

At Cabarrus County Education Foundation, that belief is at the heart of our Book-a-Palooza program. By helping students build their own home libraries, we’re not just putting books in their hands—we’re opening doors to imagination, confidence, and lifelong learning.
