We are the Jazz branch of the instrumental music department of Cannon School. Currently we have two ensembles - the Big Band, and the Jazz Combo. We gig regularly on campus, and in the Charlotte area. We have performed at many local and regional Jazz festivals - always to rave reviews.

So this summer for me is all about the building of our new Audio Lab at Cannon School. This'll be the new home for Modern Ensemble, Music Tech 1 & 2, Varsity Jazz, as well as practice room space for our musicians and podcast space for the whole school. The other day we received our 3 isolation booths from our friends at Studiobricks. Photo 1 is them on the pallets. Photo 2 is them unboxed and awaiting assembly next door in the bandroom. That's 2 One+ models and 1 XXL model if you're keeping score.

That unboxing was a beast! Mad kudos to the Tetris savants at Studiobricks who box those things. Twas quite the puzzle to unravel!

Anyway, today's work is done. Carpet in the room next week and then assembly of the booths. More photos to come so stay tuned!

So when your school Jazz Combo is 100% virtual due to the pandemic, you lean into TECHNOLOGY to help make it happen. Here's a recent recording we did of Miles Davis' "All Blues". It features George Manni on guitar, Vinny Vaccaro on trumpet and melodica, and Nicky Vaccaro on alto saxophone. (Headphones recommended)

For my band director/music tech friends -
I built the rhythm section track in Soundtrap, using Piano/Bass/Drum tracks I lifted from the Hal Leonard Realbook Multitracks play-along book called "All Blues". Using the Chrome extension called Audio Downloader I could save those tracks as stems and import them each into Soundtrap so the boys could tweak the levels as they needed on their end.

I'm so proud of these guys for taking the bumper crop of lemons we've found ourselves with this year and made some pretty tasty lemonade. At Cannon School we preach a philosophy called "Adaptive Expertise". My boys are living it.
