Preschoolers have studied the pond throughout the year, observing the seasonal changes. Yesterday, they joined Lower School Science Teacher Kim Russell for pond dipping. Using small nets, students collected water samples and then observed their findings.
This was an exciting hands-on activity for this group of voracious learners and there were cheers when different specimens were spotted, including water beetles, dragonfly larvae, tadpoles, and water scorpions!

Today, Kindergarteners visited Clark Farm as part of their farming and growing unit. Students heard first-hand from the farmers about the important jobs required to keep operations running smoothly and also had the opportunity to visit with the animals.
Not only are field trips fun, but they allow students to learn through experiences and and apply what they are learning in the classroom to make real-life connections; a pillar of the Nashoba Brooks academic program.
The impact of these field trips is evident by the energy and excitement of students as they are eager to share their discoveries and new learnings from their time in the field!

Grade 4 visited Harvard Forest today and met with professional scientists to gain a deeper understanding of how data is gathered, analyzed, and applied over time, while also reflecting on their own role as contributors to real-world research. These interactions are reciprocal: scientists learn from the students’ observations and perspectives, while students gain insight into potential future pathways in science. Being immersed in the working landscape of Harvard Forest further enhances this experience, as students observe firsthand the fieldwork practices used to study the forests and ecosystems of New England.
This field trip was in connection with their year-long citizen science study called Buds, Leaves, and Global Warming in collaboration with scientists from Harvard Forest. This partnership connects our classrooms directly to authentic scientific research conducted through Harvard University’s forestry program, where researchers investigate how climate change is influencing the seasonal growth cycles of New England forests. By participating, students are contributing valuable observations to one of the nation’s longest-running climate datasets, built from more than three decades of continuous records!
