Book Review/Recommendation

The Boy on the Wooden Box
A Leon Leyson Memoir

This is a story of the holocaust through the eyes of the youngest survivor on Schindler’s list. I have known about the horrors that he and so many others endured, and I have known about the courage and spirit that many showed during this terrible experience. But I have not thought a lot about how the survivors coped when they were set free. So it was this part of the book that struck me the most. When he told someone that he had been hungry, they said, “we had to ration, too”. They had no concept of scrounging every day for a potato peel or scrap of bread that you then shared with others. How do you explain your experiences to others whose own experience is so far removed from yours that their minds can’t grasp the reality of such cruelty and deprivation?
