I'm Allyson; a wife, mother, and passionate outdoor educator who loves to create. Tanglewood Hollow was created soon after my oldest was born and I was working as a teacher in a classroom setting. After spending years in the education field, it was glaringly noticeable to me that nature-based education materials were lacking and that educators did not have time or access to the tools needed to help foster a strong connection with the natural world. This little space online is a collection of our nature-based education materials as well as a personal account of how we've been able to "get back to nature" as a homeschooling family. "Let the children be free; encourage them; let them run outside when it is raining; let them remove their shoes when they find a puddle of water; and, when the grass of the meadows is damp with dew, let them run on it and trample it with their bare feet; let them rest peacefully when a tree invites them to sleep beneath it's shade; let them shout and laugh when the sun wakes them in the morning as it wakes every living creature that divides its day between waking and sleeping."

🔥 Could your child build a fire in the wilderness?

We’re heading back into the woods for another hands-on wilderness skills workshop with Tanglewood Hollow!

🌲 FIRECRAFT I: THE SCIENCE OF FIRE 🔥

Designed for kids who love the outdoors, enjoy a challenge, and want to learn REAL wilderness skills!

We’ll search the forest for natural tinder, experiment with different fire-building techniques, learn to use flint and steel and ferro rods, and put our skills to the test with a supervised fire-building challenge!

And this is just the beginning! We’ll be offering Firecraft II in the future, where we’ll explore primitive firemaking techniques like the bow drill and create our own firemaking kits!

Could you build a shelter in the woods using only what you find around you?

For this hands-on wilderness skills workshop, we’re heading into the woods to find out!

Students will learn the basics of building a debris shelter- a simple survival shelter constructed from branches, leaves, and other natural materials found in the forest.

We’ll learn how to choose a safe shelter location, think about wind and weather, build a strong framework, gather the right materials, and use layers of forest debris to create insulation and protection from the elements.

Then comes the best part: we’ll build them!

We had so much fun in our first Wilderness Skills class on shelter building! The kids surveyed the land to see if it was a safe area to build, learned how to build a nest and debris shelter, and did lots of teamwork with everyone!

Highlights from classes this week! We hiked and picked apples for some baking next week, learned about egg development, created tools for learning more about NH snakes, sorted insects into their orders based on their physical traits and began an insect order tree, looked at plant cells under the microscope (and learned how to use them a bit better!), and even made fire with our book club! Whew! What a wonderful week it was!

Huzzah! 🫖 We’re bringing history to Tanglewood Hollow this fall!

On October 21st, we’re stepping back into 1773 for The Boston Tea Party: A Living History Experience.

With me dressed in authentic period clothing, kids will discover what really led to that famous night in Boston Harbor- and even taste some of the actual varieties of tea that were thrown overboard!

We’re excited to add more hands-on history experiences to our programs this season. Because history is so much more fun when you can experience a little piece of it yourself.

We’re trying something BRAND NEW this fall!

For the first time ever, we’re taking Tanglewood Hollow into the woods for a Wilderness Skills: Shelter Building workshop!

Kids will work together to build full-size debris shelters using what they can find in the forest- learning survival skills while practicing teamwork, problem-solving, resourcefulness, and a whole lot of perseverance.

This is a drop-off program for ages 9–14.

Something new is coming to Tanglewood Hollow this fall… and I am VERY excited about this one!

Our family has been involved in historical reenacting for years, and I’ve been dreaming about bringing a little bit of that world to Tanglewood Hollow.

So this fall, I’ll be putting on my period clothing and inviting a small group of kids to join me for a Colonial Living Day!

We’ll spend a few hours stepping into everyday life in colonial New England- churning our own butter, baking something from scratch, tasting the colonial teas that were tipped overboard during the Boston Tea Party, exploring the clothing, writing with quill pens, trying our hands at an old-fashioned craft, playing games, and discovering just how much work went into the things we barely think twice about today.

This won’t be a sit-down history lesson. We’re going to do the history.
