Jesus said those words knowing He was about to be crucified. The word used for love there was agape. It was not emotional love or easy love. It meant choosing sacrifice, choosing others first, even when it hurts.

There are people sitting at cookouts today missing somebody. Parents who never got their son back. Kids who grew up without a dad. Husbands and wives who had to keep moving forward after the knock on the door nobody ever wants.

That verse matters because Jesus was talking about the highest form of love a person can show, laying their life down for somebody else.

That is what we remember and are thankful today.

We’ve found it.

In the fire service, few tools are relied upon more than the iconic Halligan. Its strength lies not just in its steel but in the firefighter’s knowledge and confidence in using it. When paired with a fireman who has the knowledge and mastery of its uses, the Halligan becomes more than metal; it becomes an extension of the firefighter’s will, a life-saving key. We train relentlessly to know the leverage, angles, and proper applications of this tool. But as we prepare ourselves to force physical doors, we must also ask ourselves: Are we preparing our hearts with the same urgency to walk through the spiritual door that leads to eternal life?

Just as mastery of the Halligan, or any tool of our trade for that matter, translates into success on the fireground. We learn to modify minor details, such as filing depth marks on the adz and forks, or to square off the shoulders of the forks to create a striking surface, thereby increasing our Halligan’s efficiency. Likewise, in our walk with Christ, spiritual effectiveness comes from modifying our hearts through intentional knowledge, daily discipline, and commitment. Faith isn’t an accessory; it’s a lifeline.

Even the tool’s namesake and creator, FDNY Deputy Chief Hugh Halligan, understood the deeper connection. On his original fork design, Halligan inscribed “AM + DG,” an abbreviation for Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, meaning “For the Greater Glory of God.” Chief Halligan didn’t just build another tool; he intentionally left behind a reminder that our work, our purpose, and even our tools should point to something greater, to God Himself.

Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6, ESV). Jesus is our spiritual “forcible entry” to salvation, He is the only One who can open the door to grace, hope, and eternal life. As firefighters, we know the power of being equipped and ready; however, our greatest readiness is not physical, but spiritual.
We should all apply the same dedication we give to mastering our craft to our faith. We can begin our mastery by obeying, training in God’s Word, and strengthening our relationship with Jesus. Let your life reflect the same message that Hugh Halligan etched into that piece of steel: live for the greater glory of God.

The day will come when the most critical door won’t be the one that’s forced on the fireground, but one that opens into eternity. Be prepared, not only with a Halligan in hand, but Christ in your heart.
