One of the biggest questions parents have about online tutoring is whether their child will still get that personal connection.

The answer is absolutely.

Your child’s tutor still gets to know them deeply. Their personality. Their strengths. The things that frustrate them. The moments when something finally clicks and you can see how proud they are of themselves.

That relationship doesn’t disappear because there’s a screen between them. It grows week after week, lesson after lesson, as trust is built and your child realizes they have someone in their corner who understands how they learn.

Because helping a child with dyslexia isn’t just about teaching them to read.

It’s about knowing the child behind the struggle, celebrating every victory with them, and helping them build confidence along the way.

There’s a very personal reason I do this work.

For 17 years, I was a homeschooling mom. When my youngest son began struggling significantly with reading and spelling, I did what so many parents do. I researched. I tried different programs. We even tried vision therapy.

And for a while, I wondered if maybe he just wasn’t trying hard enough.

But I eventually realized something incredibly important: he was giving me 100%. He simply needed to be taught differently.

After an evaluation confirmed dyslexia, we found structured literacy and the Barton Reading & Spelling System. That changed everything.

After about a year and a half, his reading had improved by four grade levels and his reading comprehension by three and a half. But as his mom, one of the most meaningful changes wasn’t something you could measure on a test.

His confidence came back.

That experience changed the direction of my own life. I became a certified Barton tutor because I knew there were other parents watching intelligent, capable kids struggle and wondering what they were missing.

Today, through Deciphering Dyslexia and You Can Read, my team and I work one-on-one with children, teens and adults across the country.

Sometimes a struggling reader doesn’t need to try harder.

They need someone to finally teach them in a way their brain understands.

We love receiving testimonials like the one below! This is why we do what we do…

“We can tell that his reading fluency is improving!

We have been going to the library and he has been checking out anime books regularly and is reading through them fairly quickly.

His video games have a lot of reading, which before he either didn't play them, or he would ask us to read them for him. Now he can read most of them and only needs help once in a while.

Also, this year, Josiah is having the best year of his academic life!

We are praising God about that everyday!

The Co-op was definitely the right decision for him.

He is happy, confident, and feeling successful.

What once broke my heart as a homeschooling mom now fuels my mission: helping children with dyslexia find confidence and freedom.

I know what it feels like to watch your child give everything they have and still struggle to read.

During my 17 years of homeschooling, nothing was harder than watching my youngest son pour his heart into reading and spelling, only to continue struggling no matter how hard he tried.

Then we discovered he had dyslexia, and everything changed.

That discovery lit a fire in me to find something that could truly help him. We found the Barton Reading & Spelling System, and within 18 months, his reading improved by more than four grade levels.

But even more importantly, I watched his confidence come back.

That transformation was too powerful for me to keep to myself.

It’s why I became a certified Barton tutor and pursued advanced dyslexia training. Today, I get to walk alongside other families who are facing the same struggles we once faced and help their children discover that same confidence and freedom.

What started as something deeply personal for our family has become something I now get to use to help others. ❤️

I had to share this because THIS is why we do what we do.

One of our students’ parents sent me this picture of Kelsie sitting on the couch reading a book… for fun.

And along with it, she said:

“I sat in the corner, wiping tears of excitement! This is the first time I have seen her do this! I just had to share!”

I think sometimes it’s easy to look at a picture like this and just see a child reading a book. But when you know how hard reading has been for that child, you see something completely different.

Kelsie wasn’t reading because someone told her she had to. There wasn’t an assignment. She chose to pick up a book and read.

And I can only imagine what that moment felt like for her mom after watching her work so hard to get here. 🥹

When I’m tutoring a student, I’m paying attention to so much more than whether they got the word right.

After doing this for a while, you start picking up on these little subtle cues. I notice if they immediately guess at a word or actually stop and think through the sounds. I notice if they’re hesitating a little less than they did a few weeks ago. I notice when they use something I taught them without me having to remind them.

And one of my favorites is when they make a mistake, pause, and say, “Wait… I know what I did.”

Those little moments tell me a lot.

Sometimes a student might still be making mistakes, but I can see that their brain is starting to approach the word differently. They’re thinking through it instead of automatically guessing.

And that’s progress too.

As a tutor, you learn to notice those small changes because they’re usually the first little signs that something is starting to click. 💛

I know how hard it is to hear your child say things like…

“I’m dumb.”
“I’m the slowest reader.”
“Everyone else gets it.”
“I hate school.”

I’ve heard this from students over the years, and I know how quickly those thoughts can start affecting their confidence.

When reading and spelling are hard day after day, kids can start believing the struggle says something about who they are.

But it doesn’t.

Some of the students I work with are incredibly bright, creative, funny, and amazing problem-solvers. They don’t need to be told to “try harder.”

They need to be taught in a way that actually makes sense to their brain. And when that starts to click, we often see something else come back too…

Their confidence. ❤️

Sometimes the best way to understand the difference tutoring can make is to hear it straight from the student.

One of our students recently said something that really stuck with me:

“A year ago, I could hardly read a cardboard book, but now I can read chapter books.” 🥹📚

Just think about that for a second.

A year ago, reading even a simple book felt hard. Now, she can sit down, open a chapter book, and actually read it.

That didn’t happen overnight.

It came from showing up week after week, working through the frustrating days, practicing the same skills over and over, and slowly watching things start to click.

And I think my favorite part is that she notices the difference in herself.

She knows how far she’s come.

Those are the moments that make me so proud of our students. It’s not just about getting better at reading. It’s watching a child realize, “Wow… look what I can do now.”

One thing I see all the time with the students I work with is how much the right accommodations can help their confidence.

When reading takes so much extra effort, kids can start getting really down on themselves.

They might think, “Why is this so much easier for everyone else?” or “Maybe I’m just not good at school.”

And that’s the part that really gets to me.

Sometimes something as simple as an audiobook, extra time, text-to-speech, or having directions read aloud can take away some of that pressure.

It gives them a chance to actually focus on what they know instead of spending all their energy just trying to get through the reading.

And when that happens, you can see the shift.

They’re more willing to try. They speak up more. They start believing in themselves again.

That’s why I’m such a big believer in accommodations.

They’re not about making things easier.

They’re about giving kids the support they need so they can actually show what they’re capable of. ❤️
