I received an email from a new member partner the other day, about the difference between working surplus funds on his own, versus partnering with us. He had worked the business solo before coming on board.
He’s turned in 86 files so far and has received two payouts so far totaling over $12,992.
He spent less than 43 hours turning in those files. That’s $303 an hour for the work put in.
Needless to say, he was excited.
Here’s the breakdown he gave me on what he would have made on those files, and what he would have spent, working the business on his own.
He was charging claimants 25% and the total retrieved on those two files was about $80,000.
So if he’d worked those files on his own, he would have made $20,000.
But, he would have also spent about $150 on skip tracing(claimant and occasionally relatives), $160 on postage (multiple mailings averaging 2 per file, stamps are 80+ cents, going up to 96 cents), $50 in vistaprint pre-printed mailings, $200 on mobile notaries (average $100 a pop), and $70 on on fedex return mail labels. That’s $630 in expenses. The counties he was working also required an attorney to file a motion for the surplus funds and he had cheap attorneys that charged $2,000 per file.
So he would have made $15,370 instead of the $12,992 he made with us.
But, he didn’t call 100 files at 2 numbers to call, calling 3 times – ave 2 minutes a piece that’s 20 hours, and he didn’t send 200 mailings at 1 minute to address each or 3.33 hours.
Let’s break that down again:
With us, he made $12,992, for 43 hours, with no further expenses, no cold calling, no skiptracing, no negotiation, no hiring notaries - $302/hour.
By himself, he would have made $20,000, but would have had to spend $4,630 during the process. That’s $15,370 net. Here’s the part to pay attention to. It would have taken him 66.33 hours instead of 43. That’s $231.72/hour.
So he has no ongoing expenses, works 23.33 fewer hours, and doesn’t have to cold call, negotiate or hire anyone and makes over $70 more per hour.
