It’s time for another Faculty Friday! Today we’re spotlighting Amy Nguyen, Upper School World Languages teacher.

Amy joined Cannon in 2024 and quickly found herself at home in the intimate, student-first learning environment. And then there’s the Upper School. “It’s basically Hogwarts 😉,” she says. Amy especially loves Cannon’s House system and the way it encourages students to grow beyond academics while building connection and community.

Some of Amy’s favorite Cannon memories happen outside the classroom. She loved celebrating the end of AP French with her students at restaurant La Belle Hélène and heading to SCarowinds with her advisees. “Those are the moments that make teaching feel especially meaningful,” she says.

Amy’s own journey of growth at Cannon has included participating in the Leadership Cohort with Dean Booker. The experience has helped her grow in confidence and encouraged her to step into leadership roles both at Cannon and with the North Carolina Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French.

Outside of school, Amy loves reading, hiking, traveling, and cuddling with her two pomeranians.

We’re so grateful for the energy, leadership, and love of language Amy brings to our Upper School community!

Lower School Maker and Integration Specialist Lisa Nussbaumer recently took robotics team members on their first-ever group outing. The group visited Reedy Creek Park, where they met with a Natural Resource Conservationist to learn about protecting locally threatened species.

This year’s robotics theme is biodiversity, and the visit will help inform the team’s innovation project. After more than an hour, several students stayed behind to ask more questions and wanted to keep researching at home.

School may be back in session, but learning isn’t just for students.

Cannon parents recently joined us for Back-to-School Nights across all three divisions, kicking off the evening by connecting with fellow families at parent socials before heading into classrooms to meet teachers and get a glimpse of the learning ahead.

Here’s to a school year of learning, connection, and plenty of good discussions from students and parents alike.

Meet Alex Bresalier, Middle School art teacher. Since joining Cannon in 2022, Alex has enjoyed watching his students’ journeys of growth.

Before coming to Cannon, Alex taught art at Concord Middle School and served as Director of the Arts at St. Anne Catholic School. He holds a BA in Art History and a BFA in Drawing and Painting from SUNY Purchase College.

Alex chose to continue his work at Cannon because he values the school’s commitment to building long-lasting relationships both in and outside the classroom. “My favorite part of being at Cannon is being able to watch and participate in our students’ journeys of growth.”

That spirit of growth extends to Alex’s own creative practice. For the past two years, he has been creating and selling handmade pottery at markets throughout the U.S. and abroad. You can even catch him in action as Bresalier Pottery this Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Union Street Art Walk in Concord.

In the classroom, Alex believes students are most engaged when they see their teacher not only as an instructor, but as a fellow artist. “It is deeply important to me that students are able to see my passion for the arts,” he says. For Alex, modeling the creative process alongside his students is one way to encourage them to embrace their own artistic journeys.

And then there are the Big Dawgs. During Alex’s first year at Cannon, his Class of 2027 advisory lovingly dubbed themselves the “Bresalier Big Dogs,” with a mission to spread “Big Dog Energy,” their code for honoring Cannon’s core values and being an upstanding member of the school community. Each new advisory is now officially inducted as lifelong Bresalier Big Dawgs, and the pack has grown to 38 members.

If you’ve got a niche interest, Cannon probably has a club for it.

This week, Upper School students took over the Green for Club Day, showcasing the incredible diversity of student-led clubs across campus. From discovering new passions to diving deeper into existing ones, students had plenty of opportunities to find their people and maybe discover an interest they didn’t know they had.

Shoutout to the Agriculture Club for bringing Comet the chicken!

Our seniors recently welcomed their JrK buddies with handmade posters, big smiles, and plenty of excitement for the year ahead. The JrK-Senior Buddy welcome is one of those special Cannon traditions that connects our youngest and oldest students and creates memories that last well beyond the school year.

A picture is worth a thousand words and these one-pagers have plenty to say.

Following their summer study of Of Mice and Men, sophomore Reading & Discourse students examined the novel alongside a text of their choosing: Goblin Market, The Destructors, or To a Mouse. Students then synthesized their thinking in creative one-pagers featuring thesis statements, textual analysis, symbolism, and reflection.

The result? A hallway full of thoughtful, visually engaging evidence of their learning.
