The Concord Self-Defense Academy offers self-defense training for adults, children, and families, as well as private lessons, and specialized self-defense seminars for groups and individuals. We teach two traditional Japanese martial arts, Seirenkai Karate and Seirenkai Jujitsu. Senseis Len and Johanna Glazer have over 50 years of collective martial arts experience. lieve that working, training, and playing together builds family bonds, trust, and respect while learning personal safety. Martial arts training not only promotes an active and healthy lifestyle, it also provides a fun activity that families can do together. The Concord Self-Defense Academy is part of the International Seirenkai Organization and is connected with a network of other dojos throughout the region. Seirenkai dojos maintain a clear set of guidelines pertaining to etiquette, ranks and responsibilities, as well as a tightly knit and warm family of diverse people. Our members include men, women, youths and children from all backgrounds and all walks of life who appreciate the values of our traditional arts. Discrimination of any type is not allowed in our dojo or the others in our network, and therefore we attract considerate people who enrich the organization through their participation as students and teachers (sensei). The Concord Self-Defense Academy does not emphasize competition as so many martial arts systems now do. Instead, our youth and adult members tend to value learning and self-improvement rather than “winning at all costs.” As a result of our emphasis on “doing one’s best,” the environment in our dojo fosters an ethic of “mutual welfare and benefit.”

Since 2008 the Concord Self-Defense Academy has worked in conjunction with Emerson Hospital's Integrative Health and Wellness Center. As a result of this partnership, we have been able to expand our classes and increase our offerings to the community at large. Members of the Concord Self-Defense Academy endeavor to follow the Codes of Bushido in their training and in their daily lives. These ancient Samurai codes include: benevolence, courage, honor, justice, loyalty, politeness and veracity.

It was a bittersweet day for the Concord Dojo. We had our last Sunday Jujitsu class at the Emerson Wellness Center. For the last 18 years we've had a great partnership with Emerson and we're saddened that they are no longer open for Sunday classes. Fortunately, Karate classes can continue with Emerson on Thursday nights.

A dojo is so much more than the space in which the Sensei teaches and we are so proud of the dojo and the community we've built over the past two decades. We are looking forward to finding a new home for our Jujitsu classes. We are excited to start a new chapter with the amazing students of the Concord Self-Defense Defense Academy.

No class today (Sunday 1/7) due to snow.

We have gone back and forth this morning about whether we should hold class and have decided that it is wisest to cancel today's classes...ultimately because our primary mission is to keep you all safe! While many of us live close and can probably get there safely, the snowfall this afternoon is going to pick up again compounded by freezing, and we don't want anyone to get hurt trying to get there (or get home). We always build extra classes into the session for just this reason - so don't worry; there'll still be plenty of classes this session. We look forward to starting the Jujitsu session next Sunday, 1/14. See you then!

New this fall: Learn physical and verbal techniques for self-defense and get an introduction to Japanese martial arts. This small-group 5-week introductory class gives you a chance to develop valuable tools for self-defense while learning about Seirenkai Martial Arts. Upon completion, students are encouraged to register for the regular ongoing weekly class.
