☀️ Make It Count Monday

This week's activity is Nature Color Hunt! 🌿🌼🍂

Learning doesn't have to happen indoors! Take a walk around your neighborhood, a local park, or even your own backyard, and challenge your child to find something for each color of the rainbow.

Talk about the textures, shapes, smells, and sizes of everything you discover together. Count how many items you find, compare which colors were easiest to spot, and ask questions like, "Why do you think leaves come in different colors?"

This simple activity encourages observation, language development, color recognition, critical thinking, and a love for exploring the world around them, all while making wonderful memories together.

Book Spotlight: The Bad Seed by Jory John

What if being "bad" wasn't the end of the story?

The Bad Seed introduces us to a sunflower seed who believes he's just... bad. He's grumpy, impatient, and doesn't always make the best choices. But as we learn more about his story, we discover that there's more to him than meets the eye.

This humorous and heartfelt book reminds children that everyone has difficult days, everyone makes mistakes, and no one is defined by their past. The most important lesson? We always have the opportunity to make a better choice, one step at a time.

✨ After Reading:
Grab a small jar and some sunflower seeds (or any seeds you have at home!). Every time your child makes a kind choice, helps someone, tells the truth, or shows patience, add a seed to the jar. At the end of the week, celebrate how lots of small, good choices can grow into something wonderful.

🌻 Every child has the ability to grow, change, and become the very best version of themselves—and sometimes, all it takes is one good choice to get started.

Wise Word: CREATE

Children are natural creators. Whether they're building with blocks, painting a picture, telling a story, or inventing a new game, every act of creating helps them learn, grow, and express who they are.

When we encourage children to create instead of worrying about being "perfect," we help build confidence, problem-solving skills, and a lifelong love of learning. Sometimes the most meaningful masterpieces are the ones made with a little imagination and a lot of joy.

Make It Count Monday ☀️🫧

This week's activity is all about Bubble Painting! It's the perfect combination of art, sensory play, and hands-on learning—and it's just as fun as it sounds!

You'll need:
🫧 Bubble solution
🎨 Washable paint or food coloring
🥤 A cup and straw
📄 White cardstock or thick paper

Mix a small amount of washable paint into the bubble solution, then use a straw to gently blow bubbles until they rise over the rim of the cup. Carefully press your paper onto the bubbles to create beautiful, colorful bubble prints. Repeat with different colors and watch your child's unique masterpiece come to life!

As you create together, talk about the colors you're mixing, count the bubbles, compare the sizes of the prints, or look for shapes and patterns hidden in the artwork. This simple activity strengthens fine motor skills, encourages creativity, builds early math and language concepts, and gives children the freedom to explore through play.

Book Spotlight: The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

Starting something new can feel a little scary, whether it's the first day of school, daycare, a new classroom, or even trying something unfamiliar. The Kissing Hand gently reminds children that love stays with us, even when we're apart.

Through the sweet story of Chester Raccoon and his mother's special "kissing hand," children are reassured that feeling nervous is completely normal—and that the love of those who care for them can bring comfort, courage, and confidence wherever they go. It's a beautiful book to help little ones navigate separation anxiety while encouraging meaningful conversations about emotions.

✨ After Reading:
Draw a heart on your child's palm (or use a washable heart stamp) and tell them it's a special reminder that your love goes wherever they go. Then have them draw a heart on your hand too! Before heading out for the day, press your hands together and remind each other that your love is always close by.

💕 Sometimes the smallest gestures leave the biggest imprint on a child's heart, reminding children that they are deeply loved—even when they can't be with the people they love most.

🇺🇸 Happy Memorial Day from The Bookish Baby 📚❤️

Today we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Memorial Day is more than a long weekend or time spent with family and friends, it is a day of gratitude, reflection, and remembrance for those whose courage and sacrifice made our freedoms possible. Their selflessness and dedication will never be forgotten.

As we gather with the people we love today, enjoying laughter, meals, and precious moments together, may we also take time to reflect on the blessings we often enjoy every day. Take a moment to share stories, express gratitude, and teach our littles the importance of honoring those who served with courage and love. Even small conversations can help children understand kindness, sacrifice, and appreciation.

At The Bookish Baby, we believe learning begins at home and some of the most meaningful lessons we teach our children are not found only in books, but in the values we model through love, gratitude, compassion, and remembrance.

To wonder means to stay curious.

Why is the sky blue?
Where do birds sleep?
What happens if we try it this way?

Children are full of wonder naturally.
The magic happens when we slow down enough to wonder with them.

Not every question needs a rushed answer.
Sometimes the best learning begins with simply exploring together.

Because curiosity is often the first step to a lifelong love of learning. 💛

MAKE IT COUNT MONDAY! ☀️💦✨

Activity: Ice Rescue Letters 🧊🔤

With the weather heating up, this is the perfect way to cool off while learning outside!

What you’ll need:
🧊 Ice cubes or frozen plastic letters/toys
💦 A bucket or container of water
🥄 Spoons, cups, or spray bottles

How to play:
Freeze letters (or small toys) in ice ahead of time.
Then let your little one “rescue” them outside using warm water, spray bottles, or spoons!

As each letter is uncovered:
🔤 Say the letter name
🗣️ Practice the sound together
👀 Find objects nearby that start with that letter

Why this works:
Children learn best when learning feels like play. Sensory activities like this build curiosity, language, and early literacy skills, all while keeping cool in the summer heat! ☀️

Because sometimes the messiest moments…
become the most meaningful learning memories. 💛
