IMPORTANT LEGAL UPDATE:

HB 1268, the bill that rewrites New Hampshire's home education law, was signed by Governor Ayotte on Friday and is now law. Among the most notable changes are the elimination of the notification requirement for most homeschooling families, the portfolio requirement, and the annual assessment requirement. Notification is still required in certain circumstances, such as when a family intends to use public school services or withdraw a child who is already enrolled in public school.

The NHHC is reviewing the new statute and will update our legal requirements page as quickly as possible. In the meantime, please be aware that many websites, articles, and other homeschooling resources may still reflect the previous law until organizations have had an opportunity to update their materials. Until our website has been updated, if you have questions about how the new law applies to your family, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Many homeschoolers continue to follow HB 1268, the bill that would make significant changes to New Hampshire's home education law. The bill has passed both the House and Senate, and it is now on the Governor’s desk with a must act-date of Friday. She will sign, veto, or potentially take no action on the bill. If no action is taken, it will become law without a signature. We will continue to keep members informed as the bill progresses.

Every day, the New Hampshire Homeschooling Coalition helps families find answers to questions about home education, connect with local resources, understand New Hampshire's homeschooling requirements, and build relationships within the homeschooling community.

Because we are entirely volunteer-run, every donation goes directly toward helping us maintain and improve the resources that homeschooling families rely on.

For more than 35 years, the New Hampshire Homeschooling Coalition has supported home educating families across the Granite State by providing free information, resources, guidance, and community connections. We are proud to remain an independent, volunteer-run organization serving all reasons for and methods of homeschooling.

This year, we've continued improving our website, supporting families through our newsletter and local representatives, and completing an updated edition of the NHHC New Hampshire Home Education Guidebook. We are currently awaiting final legislative updates before publication of the new Guidebook.

NH Gives begins tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. and runs through 5:00 p.m. on June 10. If the NHHC has helped your family—or if you value the support we provide to New Hampshire's homeschooling community—we hope you'll consider supporting our work.

Legislative Update: HB 1268 passed the NH Senate this week. If signed into law by Governor Ayotte, the new RSA 193-A would take effect July 1, 2026. It would drastically change the legal requirements for home educators in NH.

RSA 193-A only applies to self-funded home educators. This law DOES NOT APPLY to those homeschooling with an Education Freedom Account (EFA). The EFA program is governed by another statute entirely and those participating in it must abide by different requirements.

The hearing for HB1268 will be in the Senate Education Committee TOMORROW, Tuesday, April 21 at 9:45 AM. It will take place at the State Library (map room) at 20 Park Street, Concord.

The bill has already passed the NH House of Representatives.

The executive session for HB 1268 will take place this Monday, March 2 at 9:30 AM. It will be livestreamed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWA6v36nNHQ

This is when the House Education Committee will vote on their recommendation:
1. Ought to pass
2. Ought to pass with amendment
3. Inexpedient to legislate
4. Interim study (no further action on bill)

If the committee recommends the bill should be passed, it will be scheduled to go to the House for a vote.
