IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY!

On this day, July 29th, 25 years ago, Theatrical Mementos came into being.

With one phone call from Mary Jo DeNolf, the patient permission of Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, and a simple “yes” from Matt Iacopelli, this crazy experiment… meant to last ONE year… with the goal of “not losing our shirts”… set sail.

And here we are. 25 years… and some changes, challenges, adventures (a special shout-out to Stacey Knowles Wykoski for keeping us alive when it seemed the curtain had come down) and a WHOLE LOT of shirts later (with occasional other things along the way (yes, we did panties once… well, actually twice… but that’s another story…)), and we’re still helping folks “own the memory (and) wear the pride.”

All this has only been possible THANKS TO YOU: all the folks who have ordered shirts, and all the organizations and individuals who have trusted us to help them turn their greatest moments into wearable… (oh heck, why not) mementos. :)

Some shows are perpetual favorites and keep showing up (for better or for worse) in theatrical seasons of everywhere from elementary schools through the biggest community theatres.

Our 25TH WEEK of operation (marked on February 5, 2002) saw us collecting orders for one of those favorites: THE WIZARD OF OZ, which was being performed by Forest Hills Central HS.

That was the FIRST, but certainly NOT THE LAST, time we would do shirts for The Merry Old Land.

After that first project in 2001, things escalated quickly. (We got two projects OUTSIDE of GRCT while REBECCA was happening: one at Fennville HS, another at Sparta HS... thanks to REBECCA cast members).

Within the first year, we had already amassed OVER 25 projects.

Theatrical Mementos doesn’t make a lot of money. It has existed for 25 years mostly as a service to the West Michigan Theatre Community (and a variety of other organizations & folks along the way). Funds collected beyond the cost of getting the shirts made mostly go to paying for expenses and supplies of operation.

Our very first project was REBECCA at GR Civic Theatre. The VERY FIRST $25 PROFIT WE EVER MADE went to what? (Listed in alphabetical order.)

1 - # 10 Envelopes (that we used as our order forms)
2 - Gas (for pick-up and delivery)
3 - GR Civic Theatre
4 - Pizza (to celebrate)
