Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of Tordesillas, an agreement that effectively divided the non-Christian world between the two global powers. Brokered to resolve territorial disputes following Christopher Columbus's voyages, the treaty established a meridian line across the Atlantic Ocean. Portugal was granted exclusive rights to all undiscovered lands to the east of the line - which inadvertently secured their future claim to Brazil - while Spain received everything to the west. This dramatic division of the globe reshaped international diplomacy, accelerated European colonization, and fundamentally altered the cultural and political map of the Americas for centuries to come.
