🌊💦 FIELD TRIP REMINDER: Knott’s Soak City is THIS FRIDAY! 💦🌊

We can’t wait for a fun-filled day in the sun! ☀️🏖️

🎒 Please make sure your child brings:
✅ Bathing suit
✅ Towel
✅ Water shoes / swim shoes
✅ A change of dry clothes
✅ Money for lunch

💳 Important Reminder: Knott’s Soak City is 100% cashless. Any cash your child brings for lunch will be loaded onto a payment card when we arrive at the park.

Please label your child’s belongings if possible.

OCA’s Summer STREAM Camp is officially starting today !

We wouldn’t be Optimal if we didn’t acknowledge that though 4th of July is an American holiday and we gladly will take the day off lol it is one that is complex for African Americans .

After 1776 our ancestors were still enslaved for another 89 years ! When they asserted and celebrated that “ all men were created equal “ they were not referring to us.

During a speech Fredrick Douglas ( an abolitionist ) gave called “ What to the Slave Is Fourth of July” he stated “ The Fourth of July is yours not mines. You may rejoice , I must mourn .”

Did you know in the past black communities would celebrate July 5th instead? This was both a statement and done for protection since white mobs would be especially violent on this day.

Eventually Juneteenth gained popularity!

Anywho as you celebrate the holiday or have a cookout where you have reclaimed the holiday in your own way 🤗 don’t forget history .

Remember it is our job to pass our history down to our youth all year long 💚💪🏾!
