Meet the presenters: Dr. Helber Fernandes Ribeiro & Dr. Bruno Theiss

Helber Fernandes Ribeiro, D.A. is a Brazilian concert pianist, educator, and director of the IPPA International Piano Competition โ€“ Brazil Division. He is known for creatively merging his performance expertise with innovative pedagogy tools, advocating for increasing the representation of Brazilian piano repertoire in educational institutions and concert halls. An award-winning artist, Helber has performed, recorded, and taught globally, fostering diversity and inclusion in the music scene.

Bruno Theiss is a versatile Brazilian pianist, educator, and collaborator with a Doctor of Arts in Piano Performance and Music Theory from Ball State University. He has won multiple prestigious competitions, including the Intercollegiate Piano Competition of the West and the Mackenzie Piano Competition in Brazil. An active soloist and collaborative pianist, Theiss also serves as a staff pianist at Taylor University and Anderson University, as well as a Music Theory Instructor at Ball State University.

Meet the presenters: Dr. Masaru Sakuma

Born in La Paz, Bolivia, Masaru Sakuma is a teaching artist and freelance pianist in Phoenix, Arizona. A passionate advocate of Latin-American music, he authored a landmark study on Bolivian composer Jaime Mendoza-Nava. His first album of Bolivian art song, Paรญs de Sombra, was released in 2024 by Virtuoso Records, and his second album, Jaime Mendoza-Nava Piano Works, will be soon available. Masaru holds degrees from the University of Central Arkansas and Arizona State University.

Meet the presenters: Dr. Yoshiko Arahata

Yamaha Artist Dr. Yoshiko Arahata is a versatile pianist, improvisor, composer, and educator. Arahata has performed across the US, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, including Carnegie Hall. Arahata is Assistant Professor of Piano and Collaborative Piano at New Mexico State University, developing a brand-new collaborative piano curriculum. She founded The Pianistโ€™s Guide to Dance Accompaniment at the Eastman School of Music and serves on the Creative Music Making committee of the National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy.

Canadian pianist, Francis Yang, serves as Associate Professor of Piano at NSU. Prior to his appointment at NSU, he taught for four years at the Universidad de
Cuenca in Cuenca, Ecuador.

Ecuadorian pianists, Irene Gomez, Steven Mendoza, Melissa Patiรฑo, Erick Cabrera, Belen Tenesaca, and Jose Luzuriaga are all piano majors studying at Northwestern
State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, pursuing the Bachelor Music and the Master of Music. They come from the cities of Loja, Cuenca, Manabรญ, and Azogues.

Meet the presenter: Melissa Terral

Oregonian pianist Melissa Terrall was a 2023-2024 Fulbright scholar, researching Mexican piano repertoire at Mexico Cityโ€™s National Conservatory of Music. In addition to auditing masterโ€™s courses and visiting archives, she offered master classes and performed concerts around the city. Melissa received her Masterโ€™s in Piano Performance at the University of Kansas, studying with Dr. Scott McBride Smith. Alongside her work as piano instructor at Linfield University, she oversees a private piano studio in Salem, Oregon.

Xiaolin Chen earned her B.A. from California State, East Bay. She is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Piano Pedagogy at Texas Womanโ€™s University, where she continues to refine her artistry and explore innovative approaches to piano teaching. Meet the presenter: Dr. Fernando Vago Santana

Dr. Fernando Vago has been a piano professor at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora since 2017, where he also works in the Graduate Program in Arts, Culture, and Languages. He holds degrees in Piano, Music Education, and a Doctorate in Music. Winner of numerous competitions, his interests include piano performance, pedagogy, and literature, with a particular focus on Brazilian repertoire and chamber music. He is also an active soloist and collaborator.

Meet the presenter: Dr. Manuel Matarrita

Costa Rican pianist Manuel Matarrita develops an extensive activity as a soloist, teacher, composer and researcher. He is currently Full Professor of the School of Music and Director of the Arts Graduate Program of the University of Costa Rica. Founding Director of the Encuentro de Pianistas Costa Rica. His performances have taken him to the most important venues in Costa Rica, Central American isthmus, the United States, the Caribbean, South America and Europe.
