Art 1's Wood Block Collagraph Printmaking

Students completed a three-day printmaking project using wooden blocks, bright colors, and lots of creativity.

Day 1:
Students created 16 woodblock texture prints using analogous colors and focused on building a strong composition through repetition and balance.

Day 2:
Next, they designed their own collagraph plates on the other sides of their wooden blocks using foam stickers and cardboard. From abstract shapes to simple representational designs, students explored how shape and texture can transform a design—while also remembering that letters must be glued on backwards to print correctly!

Day 3:
After using a brayer to apply black paint, students printed their collagraphs onto their colorful backgrounds. Layering patterns, textures, and shapes helped them strengthen rhythm through repetition and keep the final artwork visually balanced.

The results? Bold, textured, beautifully layered prints—each one totally unique!
