NHD has updated its AI policy for the 2027 Contest, and as of today, October 1, 2026, the use of generative AI to create an NHD project during the 2026-2027 school year is strictly prohibited and may result in disqualification. It's ! In 1940, Cincinnati's Kay Irion turned personal adversity into innovation. After becoming paraplegic in a car accident, she became one of the nation's first stay-at-home radio hosts, broadcasting The BlueBird Club from a studio in her apartment.

Her program connected homebound, disabled, and isolated listeners while giving greater visibility to people with disabilities at a time when they were often excluded from public life. Through a diverse lineup of guests and conversations, Kay demonstrated that innovation isn't always about inventing something new. Sometimes it's about finding a new way to bring people together and create lasting change.

Teachers! NHD is excited to announce a new Silent Heroes program for the 2026/2027 academic year, Silent Heroes: Untold Stories of the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard in World War II. Sponsored by a grant from the Veterans Legacy Program, part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, apply for an opportunity to engage students in a special project to research and profile the experiences of two U.S. Navy or Coast Guard Veterans of World War II. After researching the Veterans’ lives in fall 2026, student-teacher teams will visit their local national cemetery to honor their Veterans and read eulogies at their graves.
