Following their outstanding performances at the National History Day National Contest, Daniel Hu and Catherine Shao were invited to the Mississippi Department of Education in Jackson to be recognized for their accomplishments.

Daniel and Catherine were presented with certificates honoring their achievements and had the opportunity to share their experiences through speeches. They were joined by MSMS Executive Director Ginger Tedder, Director for Academic Affairs Dr. Thomas Easterling, and Social Science Faculty member Dr. Kayla Hester.

We are proud to see our students recognized for their dedication to historical research and their accomplishments on the national stage. Congratulations, Daniel and Catherine! 🌊

And so it begins! The 37th Annual Tales from the Crypt research project kicked off Wednesday, August 20, at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library. We’re excited for these students to start a new journey 🌊

A big shoutout to our incredible Residence Life teams in Goen and Frazer Halls!

From move-in day through the first week and a half of school, these staff members have been working hard to help our students settle in, feel at home, and have a successful start to the school year.

The 2026–2027 academic year is officially underway! Our annual Opening Convocation brought together our MSMS community to begin another exciting year of learning, growth, and Blue Wave traditions.

We were honored to welcome Mississippi Speaker of the House Jason White as this year’s guest speaker. We also enjoyed a special appearance from some Mississippi legislators and, of course, the annual Emissary performance that has become a favorite Opening Convocation tradition!

Four MSMS students traveled to College Park, Maryland, from June 14–18 to compete at the National History Day National Contest. Daniel Hu, Catherine Shao, Jaida Denz, and Jordyn Taylor were among more than 3,000 students from around the world who advanced to the national competition after more than half a million students participated in the program this year.

We are proud to congratulate Daniel Hu of Tupelo, Mississippi, on receiving the Best Project in Asian American History award for his paper, “The Flames of Los Angeles: The Korean American Experience During the 1992 Los Angeles Riots.”

Catherine Shao of Columbus, Mississippi, additionally placed 5th in the Senior Paper category for her project, “A Revolution Behind-the-Scenes: Manufacturing Outsourcing, Deregulation, and the Pathway to US-Led Economic Globalization in the Crisis-Ridden 1970s.”

What an incredible accomplishment for our MSMS historians! We are proud of all four students for representing MSMS on the national stage. 🌊

We’re happy to see MSMS student Makayla Wrenn (Class of 2027) and Social Science Instructor Chuck Yarborough representing Mississippi at the 2026 Young People’s Continental Congress in Philadelphia!

The weeklong National History Day program brought together student-teacher teams from across the country to explore American history, civics, and the foundations of democracy. 🇺🇸

Emissary Training 🌊

Our 2026–2027 Emissaries have officially arrived on campus and are ready to welcome the Class of 2028!

Today, they trained with the MSU Roadrunners, building leadership skills, strengthening teamwork, and preparing to help our newest Blue Waves transition to life at MSMS.

A special thank you to Judd with Mississippi State University Undergraduate Admissions and the MSU Roadrunners for providing such a fun and engaging training experience. We'd also like to thank MSU Dining for keeping everyone fed and Bagley College of Engineering for hosting us.

We can't wait to welcome the Class of 2028 this Saturday!
