COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Ohio shoppers have been taking advantage of the state’s sales tax holiday, with teachers among those looking to save a few extra dollars as they prepare to head back to the classroom.

At Terrific Teaching Tools in Columbus, shoppers picked up classroom decorations, instructional materials and other supplies.

Store owner Barbara Saeman says the holiday brought both regular customers and some new faces through the doors.

“We had a very blessed day. Lots of customers, lots of new customers taking advantage of tax day,” Saeman said. “They were very excited to save some money, buy extra things for their classroom.”

Saeman says some customers didn’t even realize they could take advantage of the tax holiday until they were reminded at checkout.

She says the savings can be particularly helpful for teachers who often spend their own money on classroom supplies.

“We know as a former teacher, you pay a lot out of your own pocket and it helps to find good bargains, and then tax day is just an added bonus,” Saeman said.

Teacher Anna Winters was among those shopping Saturday.

She came in looking for decorations, bulletin board supplies and stickers to use as incentives for her students.

Winters said she did not purchase much, but still saved about $6.

“When you look at things like budgets for classrooms and schools, every little bit counts,” Winters said. “And I purchased this out of my own money, so I definitely appreciate it.”

Channel 4 was here yesterday to talk about the tax-free weekend. It was supposed to air last night, but they came back today to shoot more footage. It is scheduled to air tonight at 6, 7, and 11 pm. So, teachers who were interviewed, enjoy and ignore me. lol
