The community of Ohio State clinical psychology students, both current and alums! We'd love to stay in touch.

We wanted to give OSU Clinical Psych alums and students more opportunities to connect with each other, learn about what's happening in the department now, and help those of us in the department learn what great things our alums are up to. Let us know if there are any types of posts you'd like to see, and feel free to share with as many OSU Clinical Psych alums as possible!

✨Lab Spotlight✨

Check out this paper by the MINDSET Lab, which was recently accepted for publication! 🎉 Congratulations to Sarah Prieto, Jena Moody, Kate Valerio, and Dr. Jasmeet Hayes!

🔺Title: Posttraumatic stress disorder symptom severity is associated with reduced outcomes on the MoCA in a sample of Vietnam Veterans

❓Purpose: To examine if exposure to life stressors influences cognition to the same extent as PTSD symptoms. Studied 274 Vietnam War Veterans

🔎 Results: PTSD symptom severity, but not total number of stressful events, was associated with poorer cognitive performance on the MoCA

❗️Major takeaway: Cognitive performance is disrupted by *persistent and severe stress symptoms* following a traumatic event, rather than exposure to multiple stressful events.

The paper is in press at the Journal of Traumatic Stress (doi.org/10.1002/jts.22830)

Congrats to Matt Southward, PhD (Cheavens, 2019) for earning an NIMH K23 Career Development Award!! The project is called “A Precision Medicine Approach to Target Engagement for Emotion Regulation.”

The goal of the study is to test whether it is better to teach people several different emotion regulation skills less intensively or prioritize one that may be their personal strength in depth. By collecting EMA data from people before and after they learn these skills, Matt will be able to test if certain skills or certain combinations of skills are more efficacious for reducing negative emotions in the moment, and if this relates to broader clinical symptom change.

Check out the grant with this number! K23MH126211
