Column: Ohio House bill 239 could be antidote for 'test distress'

Op-ed in today’s Columbus Dispatch by OEA President Becky Higgins. This bill is a thoughtful way to restore some balance to our classrooms by addressing overtesting while also keeping high standards. Less time spent on

Day two of the Ohio Education Association’s spring representative assembly. It’s been a big weekend. We’ve elected a new President, Vice President, two NEA directors and a seat on the OEA board of directors. Taking care of new business items today.

[05/10/19]   Congratulations, Scott DiMauro, President-elect of OEA.

Big day at the OEA RA. Today we elect a new President and Vice President.

On Wednesday, May 8, 2019 the Testing Reduction Act (HB 239) was introduced in the Ohio House. The bill, sponsored by Representatives Gayle Manning (R- North Ridgeville) and Erica Crawley (D- Columbus), is bipartisan legislation.

Key provisions in HB 239 are:

- Reduce state-mandated standardized tests to the federal minimums by eliminating four high school end-of-course exams. (Geometry, ELA I, American History, American Government)

- Require school districts to convene a local work group made up of teachers, parents and administrators to examine district-required testing and make recommendations for ways to reduce the amount of time spent by students on testing.

- Provide that the state continues to offer a paid administration of the ACT/SAT for high school juniors, but student participation would be voluntary.

Please continue to follow as this bill moves through the legislative process.

A lot of GJEA pride around our district!

RCS BOE passed a resolution opposing state school takeovers. Robert Barga tweaked the original to show the historical perspective of public education. BOE President Joe Begeny stated, “Public education is not something new, it’s not trendy. It’s the bedrock of American society.”

Oakland teachers' strike ends with 11 percent raise and halt on charter schools

The superintendent praised the agreement:

“Our teachers are the core of everything we do as a school district, and we are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement that shows them how valuable they are," she said. "The contract will help ensure more teachers stay in Oakland and that more come to teach in our classrooms and support our students.” Teachers will also get a 3 percent bonus when the contract is ratified.

Perspective | Why Donald Trump Jr.’s ‘loser teachers’ comment was ‘a chilling moment’ for educators around the world

“In a stadium filled with people chanting “USA, USA,” the son of the president of the United States called for hostility toward teachers because of their so-called political leanings. This is a message you would expect in an authoritarian regime, not at a rally for the U.S. president.” Three teachers — from the United States, Canada and the Netherlands — link his comment to other similar sentiments manifesting around the world.

Central OEA NEA

Are you sick and tired of the harm standardized testing is inflicting on your students? Ready to organize to roll back state testing requirements in Ohio?

Join fellow OEA members to share your concerns and discuss strategies for convincing legislators to reduce testing next Saturday, January 26, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at OEA Headquarters.

Governor Mike DeWine has said he wants to fight for what’s best for Ohio’s children and is on the record in support of reducing state testing requirements. With a new governor and legislature now preparing for budget and education policy changes, now is the time to make our voices heard.

Parking is available in the OEA staff lot at the corner of Young and Oak Streets, at metered spots on the streets surrounding the building, and in the parking garage directly behind the building.

All concerned OEA members are welcome. If you plan to attend, please RSVP. |

For our staff who utilize Remind.

Unfortunately, carrier fees aren’t just affecting our users in Canada. Because of a new Verizon fee, we'll be forced to end text notifications on January 28 for Verizon Wireless customers who use our free service.

Ohio Democrats nearly match Republicans in Statehouse votes, but will remain in the deep minority; what's ahead for gerrymandering

Excellent read about the dramatic impact of Ohio’s gerrymandered districts. Ohio is not as “red” as one may think.

Republicans have a supermajority in the Ohio state legislature, but only received 50% of the total votes.

In the U.S. House, the GOP took 12 of 16 seats, but received only 52% of the total votes.

This is concerning no matter which party has control. This isn’t what democracy looks like. Ohio Democrats won more votes than Republicans in 2018 Ohio Statehouse races, but will remain in the minority.

Betsy DeVos Sued For Failing To Implement Automatic Student Loan Forgiveness

Secretary DeVos is adding barriers to higher education instead of making it more accessible. A new lawsuit claims tens of thousands of borrowers are still waiting for the Department of Education to erase their debt — about $250 million — as it was ordered to do last month.
