Gahanna-Jefferson Education Association

[06/06/20]   The Gahanna Jefferson Education Association believes that every citizen has the right to protest peacefully as it is happening across our nation as well as right here in Columbus. We recognize that institutional racism exists and needs to be routed out of our society at all levels. Ohio Education Association’s President Scott DiMauro reminds us, “we have a unique responsibility as educators to fight against injustice” and “only by addressing these deep-seated issues head-on can we ensure that all students are positioned for success, regardless of where they live or what they look like.”

In part, all of us as educators and role models for our students and community have a responsibility for understanding and amplifying the work for social justice in our schools especially for our minority students. By doing this, we will be serving all of our students. As educators, we have to acknowledge our obligation to oppose systemic and individual racism, as well as any other form of discrimination, and create inclusive and democratic spaces where all students know their value. We are committed to continuing to advocate for meaningful professional development that recognizes and highlights the diversity in the Gahanna Jefferson Public Schools. Educating all of us on diversity issues makes us better teachers and most importantly better people. The Gahanna Jefferson Education Association believes that “All Lives Matter” when “Black Lives Matter”. We see you; we hear you, we stand with you and support you.

Ohio's top educators explain draft plan to re-open schools

"A lot of these interventions that would be required to keep schools safe, will require more resources, will require more people and if there aren't the resources to do that it might mean schools have to stay closed and have to continue with remote learning," said Scott DiMauro, President of the Ohio Education Association. Parents and teachers have eagerly been awaiting details on what school might look like next fall. They are wanting answers to questions like: will students continue to learn remotely? Education funding cuts seen as likely as Gov. Mike DeWine considers how to balance state budget

Our students, their families, and teachers have paid a big enough price already.

It is important for Congress to step up and help the states support K-12 education during this difficult time. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has less than two months to fill a multi-billion dollar budget hole. And then a second one will await him.

“We may be miles away, but we’re still united as one!”

No reading score requirements for Ohio third-graders this year moving onto fourth grade

“Newly enacted Ohio law temporarily removes the requirement that a student meet the promotion threshold for the 2019-2020 school year to advance to fourth grade.”

Instead, the state is asking teachers and principals to monitor a third grader’s reading level to ensure their skills are strong enough to move ahead.” No state testing means some Ohio students won’t be held back due to scores on the third-grade reading guarantee spring assessments. However, that doesn’t mean every third grader will move onto fourth grade next year. Parkmoor Elementary School within Columbus City Schools started handing...

Voucher freeze draws grumbles, but legislature’s easing of graduation rules and testing earn praise

Graduation, testing, third grade assessments, report cards, school board meetings, and of course vouchers. Here is what the state legislature has done. The Ohio legislature froze the state's EdChoice vouchers for next school year, amid coronavirus concerns, while eliminating state tests and report cards and while letting districts decide which high school seniors can graduate.

Governor Mike DeWine on Twitter

Look for action in the state legislature next week regarding mandated state testing. “School mandated testing: I’ve in contact with legislative leaders and will be asking the General Assembly to pass legislation to forgo state testing for the 2019-2020 school year.”

Some positive movement in amending Ohio’s EdChoice voucher program. Now is the time to contact your state senator to urge support of the House passed bill! See OEA’s statement below.

On Wednesday, February 5, 2020, the Ohio House voted with a strong, bi-partisan majority (88-7) in favor of Amended Substitute Senate Bill 89. Through this action the House seeks to resolve the still looming crisis that would have more than 1,200 public schools eligible for EdChoice vouchers based on a flawed report card system. SB 89 addresses the issue of EdChoice vouchers by eliminating most new EdChoice vouchers and shifting the program to one based on family income.

Additionally, the bill dissolves Academic Distress Commissions (a part of the failed state takeover law) and restores local control of the Lorain, Youngstown and East Cleveland school districts by June 30, 2020.

Ohio Education Association supports SB 89 and urges the Ohio Senate to move swiftly to adopt the House’s changes to the bill. To urge your Senator to support SB 89 visit
