I am disappointed at things I have recently learned about when it comes to a special education advocate and an educational attorney. It makes me feel ashamed to do what I do as a special education advocate. These particular actions go against my belief that an advocate, whether nonlegal or legal, should be a part of the IEP TEAM. Not someone who may slow down the team, essentially becoming the nonproductive member of the team. This would actually be the exact opposite of the definition of a good child advocate.
Maybe I have more empathy for teachers right now because I sat in their chair for 14 years. To be going into meetings right now and completely bashing teachers and staff is unprofessional. On top of that threatening law suits due to the way the teacher and district are handling virtual learning makes me sick No district, administrator or teacher has ever gone through anything like this. They are learning as we are learning as advocates. Instead of law suits, let’s work together for the overall good of education to come up with solutions. Creating more problems will only slow the process of getting your child what they need.
Let’s be a TEAM for the child during these times. We have to, it will be the only way we as a TEAM will keep the child progressing.
Keep fighting the GOOD fight!
