Gordon Wood's Remarkable Legacy (Bonus) 06/18/2026

In a recent appearance on The Washington Times' podcast "History As It Happens," Dr. Daniel Gullotta and other experts were interviewed by award-winning broadcaster Martin Di Caro about the late Gordon S. Wood and his importance in the field of early American history.

"We talked about his impact on the field, his historical lovers and haters, his role in debunking the 1619 Project’s claim that slavery was central to the American Revolution, and of course, his name being dropped in Good Will Hunting."

Educators from around the country are at The Ohio State University this week for the second of three weeklong workshops dedicated to "teaching the teachers" how to breathe life into their classrooms when covering the Declaration of Independence.

Today's activities included the conclusion of a simulation about the debates and processes of the Continental Congress and signing the Declaration. This afternoon, they were scheduled to visit the Ohio Supreme Court and Columbus Museum of Art.

One participant even came dressed the part for his role in the debate!

Check out the photos, including the members of our hardworking workshop facilitation team, who met up for early morning coffee and “culture therapy” after lots of time in conference and hotel mode.

Natural Law and War Conference, Day 1 Lectures 06/17/2026

The Salmon P. Chase Center's Dr. William Simpson is among a distinguished list of speakers, responders, and moderators participating in a two-day conference at Pusey House and St Cross College, Oxford, England.

The June 18 and 19 conference, titled "Natural Law & War: 400 years of The Law of War and Peace", focuses on questions such as: "What can doctrines of natural law tell us about waging war and about peace-making? Are ancient sources that may have been unknown to Grotius’s age helpful in answering the questions? Do the ‘laws of nature’ that science has since uncovered help us? Can the theology, which undergirded both Grotius’s writings and the modern natural rights and human rights doctrines, help in answering these questions?"

The conference is being held in partnership with the Chase Center at Ohio State University, the School of Civic Leadership at the University of Texas at Austin, and the Canterbury Institute.

We're taking a look into our Teaching the Declaration Workshop happening now at the Fawcett Center! Teachers from around the country have traveled to spend this week learning from historians, philosophers, consultants, and one another about how to bring the Declaration of Independence to life in their classrooms.

By experiencing the primary documents in a whole new way and embodying a Continental Congress member, educators are getting first-hand experience and resources to bring into their curriculum as the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration draws near.

We'll be completing this workshop twice more over the following two weeks!

America Just Lost One Of Its Greatest Defenders 06/11/2026

In the June 9 "Daily Wire," Dr. Daniel Gullotta reflects on the passing of renowned historian Gordon Wood, who died June 6 in an accident in Rhode Island.

Gullotta writes, "His death came just weeks before the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and it is a true tragedy that one of the most celebrated historians of the Revolution and the Founding did not live to see this milestone."

New Report: How Parents Can Help Their Kids Build a Faith That Lasts 06/08/2026

Dr. Jesse Smith's recent article, published by the Institute for Family Studies, explores how parents can "help their kids build a faith that lasts."

In the article, Smith writes: "Religious affiliation and participation in the United States have declined steadily over the past several decades. Fewer Americans now attend worship services regularly, identify with a faith tradition, or describe religion as central to their daily lives. This shift is especially pronounced among younger cohorts, who are more likely than previous generations to report no religious affiliation and less likely to engage in institutional religious practices."

He continues that, "While belief has not disappeared, it has become more individualized and less connected to church life. As a result, many religious communities now face a sustained pattern of generational decline rather than temporary fluctuation, raising concerns for churches and church members alike about the long-term vitality of their congregation."

Executive Director Lee Strang and Dr. Daniel Gullotta are being recognized as contributors to the "Civitas Collection", a scholarly publication from The University of Texas at Austin's Civitas Institute.

Both of these articles are timely, as we are moving toward the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this July!

In Strang's article, "The Declaration of Independence: Why It Holds No Special Role in Constitutional Interpretation," he writes that the Declaration inspires but doesn't interpret — whatever its moral power, it was never ratified as law, and originalism rightly limits constitutional interpretation to the written Constitution alone. https://go.osu.edu/DJPh

Gullotta's article, "No King But Jesus: Religion in the American Revolution," explains that "Religion wasn't incidental to the American Revolution — patriots, loyalists, and pacifists alike framed their choices in Scripture and Providence, making independence as much a sacred drama as a political one." https://go.osu.edu/DJPg
