Day by day we build these skills up. I’m proud of this guy because he looks pretty smooth when he’s doing this stance and motion drill. Maybe it doesn’t seem like much but I watched numerous kids come up doing this stuff. A lot of them fell off, but the ones that stayed ended up being very tough. What a day today people. Thanks to my friend Chad Blevins for giving us notice the one and only Sam Jones was going to be in Columbus. It’s almost a crime that Charlie hadn’t met Coach Sam yet but we finally fixed that today. We went up to Powell Fitness to learn from Coach and got a few rounds of sparring in. What a great day. Day by day we chip away at building this skill. This is our best version of the Sam’s Gym system of striking that is close to 100 years old. Throwing a jab to get in range, blocking and slipping punches, combinations on the inside are all covered in this short video. If you want to learn let us know!

Here’s a good old “trap and roll” mount escape for our new people. We’re getting these new folks up to speed on basic BJJ techniques and none are more important than classic, timeless mount escapes.

Today we worked on the classic collar choke, Jiu Jitsu 101. Awesome stuff. Then we worked on a series I learned at a Carlson Gracie Jr. seminar in like 2014. I’ve been trying to perfect it ever since. Collar choke, pass the opponent’s arm across, shoulder lock, arm lock and maybe next class we’ll do the sweep.

Most people don’t realize how much practice it takes to be good at something. I was looking for good clips to post tonight. When it was done I realized I had created a pretty good look into our practice. Here we’re just defending singles over and over again tweaking each time. Now that I look I’m actually pretty happy with it. This isn’t easy for them or me but I think it will be worth it. Like I told the kids, about 0.1% of people can REALLY do this stuff.

This is the technique I learned at my first class, about 20 years later I’m teaching to my son and my students. That’s the thing about this that people don’t realize, when you take your time to go to class and pay the money to learn the stuff you never know how it can pay back for years and years. People come in crying about the time and the money. SMH. I NEVER regret the time and money I spent learning this.

The Brandon’s Gym recruiting is in full effect! I can be a bad coach but if I keep getting talent I’ll have good results! Haha. Just kidding but the way some of these young kids are wrestling is really impressive. They have done some great things just improvising. The smallest ones are already some mat monsters!
