📚 Our students are growing as readers—and our community is helping make it happen!

BCSC’s IREAD results continue to show exciting progress. Over the past three years, every student group highlighted—students receiving special education services, free/reduced lunch students, English Learners, and general education students—has shown growth.

That success happens because of great teachers, supportive families, hardworking students, and caring adults who invest their time in our kids.

One way you can be part of that success is by becoming a BCSC Book Buddy! ❤️

Book Buddies spend just one hour a week reading one-on-one with two 2nd or 3rd grade students. It’s a small commitment that can make a BIG difference in a child’s reading skills, confidence, and love of reading.

See the information below to get involved and help us keep the momentum going!

One hour a week can change a life forever. ❤️📚

What makes a great school? Great teachers who know their students—and know how to help them grow. ❤️

At BCSC, our teachers work together to make sure students get the instruction they need, when they need it. L. Frances Smith Elementary School is a great example of that commitment in action.

At L. Frances Smith Elementary School, Sonic Time is a dedicated reading intervention time each morning for our primary learners. Students receive targeted instruction based on their individual reading levels and are reassessed every two weeks so we can adjust groups and meet their needs.
Our staff work together to create small, intentional groups focused on strengthening foundational reading skills. This intervention has made a significant impact on student achievement over the last few years and contributed to our 89.2% IREAD pass rate last year.

🇺🇸Celebrating Friendship Across the World! 🇯🇵

For five unforgettable days, BCSC had the privilege of welcoming 16 middle school students, three teachers, and two administrators from our sister city, Miyoshi, Japan!

This experience was about so much more than visiting a new place, it was about building friendships, sharing cultures, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. ❤️

A special thank you to our incredible host families and students who opened their homes and hearts to our Miyoshi guests. The relationships built during these five days are what make this exchange so special.

We are also grateful to the The City of Columbus, Indiana, Mayor Mary Ferdon, and City Council for warmly welcoming our visitors, kidscommons for giving our guests an opportunity to explore and experience their space, Foundation For Youth for hosting the students at Youth Camp, and the many volunteers and community members who helped make every part of their visit unforgettable.

To our friends from Miyoshi: Thank you for visiting Columbus and BCSC. We hope you take home wonderful memories! 🇯🇵🤝🇺🇸

🔬 Learning isn’t just happening in the classroom—it’s coming to life at Columbus East!

Anatomy & Physiology students are working to keep their “patient” alive by replicating homeostasis—maintaining stable electrolyte levels, fluid levels, and body temperature for five minutes.

Meanwhile, Chemistry & Physics students are putting engineering and design to the test by creating different structures, testing their durability, and analyzing surface area-to-volume ratios.

Hands-on learning. Critical thinking. Problem-solving in action.💡
This is what learning looks like at East! 🔥

Safety Starts with Strong Partnerships

BCSC was honored to recently welcome back Julie Q. Smith, Director of the Indiana Office of School Safety, for a visit to learn more about our school safety practices.

During her visit, Director Q Smith received an update on BCSC’s School Resource Officer (SRO) and School Safety Officer (SSO) programs and shared high praise for the work of our team and the design of our approach. She plans to share elements of BCSC’s model with other school corporations across Indiana.

We are incredibly proud of our SROs and SSOs and grateful for the relationships they build with students, staff, and families every day. Their commitment goes beyond keeping our schools safe, they are trusted, visible members of our school communities.

Thank you to our entire safety team for helping make BCSC a safe and welcoming place to learn, work, and play.

On behalf of BCSF, we were proud to present Kaila with a $500 check as a small expression of our gratitude for the heart, dedication, and passion she brings to her classroom every day!
