I ended the relationship, but our 'final closure' conversation completely shattered my self-doubt and made me question my own memory..." 💔🧠🌀
After ending things with my ex, he convinced me to meet one last time for a "proper conversation." I went in with a clear mind, but left feeling emotionally drained, shut down, and deeply confused.
Instead of a mature goodbye, the entire tone shifted into classic narrative rewriting:
Rewriting the past: He suddenly claimed he "never said" I couldn't go away for a weekend with female friends, directly contradicting conversations we had multiple times. When called out, his story shifted again to how he's just "uncomfortable" with my gay male friends.
Fake introspection vs. total denial: At one point he admitted he "created problems beforehand" regarding my independence, but in the same breath, insisted those issues never actually existed and that we "shared the same view of a healthy relationship."
Weaponizing my self-improvement: When I brought up his anxious attachment and insecurity, he defensively barked, "I'm secure, ask anyone!" then weaponized my therapy against me, implying I'm the one broken with fears and insecurities.
Invalidating my character: He claimed he wouldn't wait around for me to "gain maturity" or "get things out of my system." Wanting an occasional weekend with friends doesn't mean I lack commitment—I am a loyal, monogamous woman who prioritized him heavily without making him my absolute entire world.
The worst part? He held my hand, cried, and tried to be affectionate, but I felt completely numb because I simply could no longer trust his version of reality.
I’m standing my ground and staying no-contact, but the self-doubt is heavy.
To anyone who’s been through a exit-interview like this—does this sound like a man experiencing actual growth, or just someone frantically shifting the narrative the second the breakup became real?
