John (62) and Sally (Foster - 62) Smith live up a mountain in Asheville NC. While they were not in immediate danger of flood water. However, they are without water, electricity, and internet where they live. I have received an email via John's phone and his reply to my email and text is as follows -----
John, thanks for your concern. This city and surrounding area have been absolutely devastated with property damage and numerous fatalities. We are fine but no power or water service and no idea when they will resume, days or weeks. We have reserves of food and water and places to go and restock. No wifi and very spotty cell service. But still we are the lucky ones.
John

From John Jacobs. I just read a short article on the effectiveness of Pre-K education.
I quote from the article (link below).
Quote: One study, which assessed the Tennessee Voluntary Pre-K program (TNVPK) – a large state-funded pre-k program that enrolls roughly 25% of the state’s 4-year-olds – revealed negative impacts on academic and behavioral outcomes during elementary and middle school. Another, the Head Start Impact Study, provided discouraging long-term results, finding almost no evidence of above-chance advantages for student attendees. Unquote
I wonder if Ms. Swales published about early education at University School?
When Science Questions Preschool Effectiveness
Evidence indicates varying success in current Early Care and Education programs, with some showing negative impacts, highlighting the necessity for rigorous research and improved program implementation. Early care and education (ECE) programs – like Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) and Head Start – are ...

From John Jacobs. Just announced by Vanderbilt University and the Metro Nashville Public Schools that Vanderbilt will establish a STEAM laboratory school at John Early Museum Magnet Middle School.
Does this sound like history repeating itself almost 100 years after the experiment at OSU?

University School students were from all over the Columbus area. See the whole series of Columbus neighborhood WOSU videos on U Tube or Columbusneighboorhoods.org
Several students at University School lived in the Worthington, Ohio area. The Rush Creek development in Worthington was where Dick Baker and Hal Pepinski's families both lived, Flint Road was where John and Ann Shaw lived, and for Richard Morris who now lives in Worthington.

As requested by Beccy Stewart:
SHEPHERD’S PIE
(The ratio I use is 2 lbs. potatoes to 1lb. ground beef. Originally this would use ground lamb, but the school used ground beef.) This serves about 4 people.
1 lb. ground beef
2 lbs. mashed or whipped potatoes (I use buttermilk instead of milk to make it creamy and also add a lot of butter for richness and flavor)
1 can beef consomme
1 med onion, diced
1 cup sliced mushrooms, optional
1 tsp. each oregano, sage, basil
1 tbsp. dried parsley
1 cup sour cream
Salt/pepper to taste
Parmesan cheese for topping
Brown meat and onions in butter and break meat up into small bites. When getting brown, add the mushrooms to cook down and brown. Remove everything from skillet and put in a bowl. Make a thick gravy from the pan drippings using about 2 tbsps flour to make the roux. Add the consommé, the herbs, salt and pepper. Finally stir in the sour cream and return the meat/onion mixture to it.
Pour the meat mixture into a buttered casserole dish (this would nicely fill an 8” square one). Spread the potatoes on top in a nice thick layer. (You might not need all of them) Finally spread a layer of grated parmesan cheese or mix the cheese with some buttered bread crumbs and spread on top.
Bake at 350 degrees (in a preheated oven) for 20 to 30 min. or until the top is browned and crispy and all heated through.

FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY
Robert Butche, (’54), author, and AAUS historian, has most generously donated the remainder of his University School related books as a fund raiser for AAUS.
We are pleased and grateful to be able to offer these books at a substantial discount.
The books:
1) I hear Music, the Mary Ruth Tolbert Story. This is truly one of the best books I have ever read (I am a retired Librarian, by the way.) Not only is the story of Mary Tolbert, who forever shaped and changed Music Education in Ohio schools, absolutely fascinating, but Bob weaves in very relevant history of the local Shawnee tribes (Pickaway County Ohio) and their role in the American Revolution. It is a beautiful softcover book, with color pages, which we are offering to our members for $15 and $5 for postage.
2) Growing Up in University School In this book, Bob brings you into his world growing up in the 1950s. Not only was life outside University School going through the many post-World War II changes, but University School as well was an ever changing process, an “experimental school” where academic courses would evolve, be removed, be added along with extra-curricular activities, sports, clubs and more. Those of us who went to University School in the 30s, 40s, and 60s very likely had several different experiences from those in the 1950s. There is an introduction on the back of the book from Paul Klohr, one of University School’s most eminent professors. A wonderful, gripping read! The book is softcover, well illustrated in black and white photos. This book is $10 plus $5 postage.

Just want you to know that TN has enacted a new law. House Bill 1232 authorizes districts to maintain a training school for grades pre-kindergarten through 12 to provide practice teaching experience for teachers in training. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
