Our Pollinator of the Month for July is the soldier beetle! This helpful little insect is not the sort of bug that we usually picture when we imagine pollinators, but it's essential to Ohio ecosystems nonetheless. Soldier beetles are often found on yellow flowers, particularly goldenrod. The soldier beetle family, Cantharidae, contains thousands of species, with a few hundred of them being found throughout the United States. Our Biocontrol of the Month for July is the Aureobasidium pullulans fungus. This fungus has proven incredibly useful in preventing plant diseases, as it both outcompetes pathogenic fungi for nutrients and produces antifungal defensive compounds. A. pullulans is currently being studied for its potential in warding off common strawberry diseases such as gray mold. In a recent study, scientists used bumblebees as vectors by having the bees pick up A. pullulans spores (in a manner similar to how they pick up pollen) and deposit them onto strawberry plants. Happy July, Master Gardeners! Our Plant of the Month is blue vervain. This is a native wildflower from the verbena family that serves as a great alternative to non-native species like Brazilian and tall verbena. Blue vervain is an upright perennial which prefers moist, gravelly soils. The bluish-purple flowers bloom from June through September. Vervain species have great significance in several cultures; across both North American Indigenous and European nations, the herbs have been heralded for centuries for their potential medicinal and spiritual uses.
