Today's we are celebrating Nick!
Prior to American Diesel, Nick worked in the automotive field for 9 years at a family-owned muffler shop. Nick enjoyed his time working on cars, however, he always had a drive to work on diesel trucks. As Nick puts it, “I wanted to get my hands on the BIG stuff!”
As Nick explored his options, he started to look for diesel mechanic jobs here in Columbus, Ohio. After searching online for open positions, he stumbled upon our hands-on training program.
“This program was exactly what I needed to get my foot into the diesel industry. I don’t like traditional schooling; a fast-paced, hands-on program like American Diesel was perfect for me.”
Nick did phenomenally well in our program, graduating in the top of his class, as he quickly learned all of the fundamental skills that he needed in just a few short weeks.
“I’d love to give a shout out to Myron Benner and the instructors at ADTC. They really invest in each student. Not only did they answer every question I had, they would get under the truck and show me. I love that.”
Before graduation day, Nick was already hired with his new company where he started his diesel career working on school buses. After about one year, a better opportunity arose to work for the City of Columbus. “I worked on everything: fire trucks, garbage trucks, dump trucks, street sweepers, everything.” Nick worked for the city for 4 years, and quickly became the “go-to” guy.
That’s when we decided to steal him back! Instead, however, this time not as a student, but as a diesel instructor. Nick has been an excellent teacher over the last 6 months, producing the next wave of entry-level diesel mechanics.
“American Diesel changed my life and put me in a field with a lot of growth. Now I get to change other people’s lives in the same industry, and that’s really cool.” We couldn’t agree more. Congratulations, Nick!

It's !
Today we are recognizing Jarrett P for his hard work and success.
Jarrett was previously working at Fyda Freightliner in Columbus, Ohio doing basic tasks around the shop, such as sweeping the floors. He had always wanted to work on trucks as a mechanic; however, he didn’t have 2 years and tens of thousands of dollars to learn the trade.
After a few months of working in the shop doing menial taks, Jarret quickly proved that he was a hard worker. In 2018, Fyda Freightliner sent him to American Diesel to learn how to be an entry-level diesel technician.
Jarrett was extremely grateful for this opportunity and did very well in our program, soaking up all of the knowledge he could while he was here. After just a few weeks of hands-on training, Jarrett returned back to the shop and was immediately able to contribute as a mechanic.
There are many people out there like Jarrett, working jobs that don’t utilize them to their full potential. Instead of trying to hire from the outside, companies might have current employees who would be extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn a new, exciting, and much needed skilled trade.
Congratulations to Jarrett!
And kudos to Fyda Freightliner for investing in their hard-working young talent! This is just one of the many ways we are helping solve the diesel technician shortage.

It’s Tuesday, which means it's time for !
It’s been a year and a half since Gregory Bishop graduated from our Columbus facility; and last week Greg dropped by to pay his prior instructors a pleasant visit! After speaking with him for a few minutes, we were blown away at his growth and success as a diesel mechanic in this short period of time.
Prior to American Diesel, Greg spent 4 and a half years serving our country in the U.S. Army. After his military service he obtained his CDL-A license and was driving trucks over-the-road for about 3 years. Then, COVID happened. Like many Americans, Greg found himself out of employment and searching for his next chapter.
“When I lost my position during the pandemic, I genuinely didn’t know what I was going to do with my future. I was in need of a growable career, not a job. When I heard about American Diesel I knew mechanic work was a skill I could learn and it was a skill I could be good at. So I gave ADTC a shot, and I’m so glad that I did.”
A career change is no small decision, and like many of our students, Greg was a bit skeptical if ADTC was the right choice. “I almost didn’t think it was possible. ADTC was going to put me up in a hotel, give me tools, and help me find an employer in 5 weeks? That didn’t seem real to me.” He laughed, “look at me now”.
For the last year and a half, Greg has been working at Fedex on the south side of Columbus, OH. “At first I was doing the basics: PM’s, tires, and brakes. Today, I’m doing everything from overheads to in-frames, to transmission work and rear-ends. I’m making about $30,000 more per year than I have in any of my other jobs throughout my life. It’s amazing.”
We couldn’t agree more, it is amazing. Greg is the only mechanic at his location and he is now running the show!
“I love my job. I love the satisfaction of something coming into the shop broken, putting my mind to solving the issue and seeing it roll back off the lot fixed. I love being the person that people rely on, whether that’s a truck in the shop or a 4am road call that gets Billy back on the road.”
There’s a beautiful analogy in Greg’s story: like a truck that needs new brakes and an oil change, Greg needed new skills and opportunities for growth. At American Diesel, if you bring the effort, we will put our energy into making sure you leave ready to hit the ground running.
Here’s to many miles ahead for Greg’s journey!

New Year, New Highlight!
There is no one more deserving than our very own John Austin. John was a student here at American Diesel Training Centers (ADTC) in our very first class back in 2017. Prior to American Diesel, John worked in construction and picked up any odd-jobs he could find to provide for his family.
“I spent my whole life trying to find work that made me feel accomplished and fulfilled. Before I found diesel mechanics, I didn’t have that”.
At 32 years old, John saw a yard sign for our program off State Route 104 & Lockbourne Rd. To say John took a leap of faith when entering our program would be a massive understatement. When John took his first tour of our facility, we had one truck and one tool box sitting in the middle of a massive 20,000 sq. foot warehouse. That leap of faith is all it took for John to change the direction of his life.
“I had a lot of personal hardships at the time, this program and being a mechanic allowed me to win the daily battles in life. I knew when I clocked out at the end of each day that I did something that was not only moving me forward, but also helping other people. That made me happy.”
After a few weeks of hands-on training, John landed himself a job at one of the most prestigious, independent shops here in Columbus, Ohio. I still remember John’s employer calling us one year after hiring him stating: “I would hire 10 more of him tomorrow”.
Long story short, John worked his tail off for 5 years as a diesel mechanic. During that time, ADTC became the #1 program for diesel mechanics in the United States and was growing at a record pace. In late 2021, we developed the need to hire an additional instructor, and that’s when John’s story came full-circle.
Last month, we celebrated John’s one-year anniversary as an instructor here at ADTC. As John says, “American Diesel provided me with the opportunity to make my quality of life better. As an instructor, I now have the ability to provide that same opportunity to people that were just like me searching for growth.”
We couldn't be more thrilled to have John as a part of our team. His story continues to inspire us to proceed in helping students just like him - students who are hard-working individuals who genuinely want to grow, but don’t have the time or finances to enroll in traditional programs.
Congratulations, John!
