Last week, Mrs. Andress's 4th graders had a surprise visitor from another universe! 🌎

Their teacher transformed into an alien who had never made a peanut butter & jelly sandwich before and had to rely completely on the step-by-step directions her students wrote. And when we say completely…we mean exactly what they wrote.

“Put the peanut butter on the bread.”
Okay…but which side of the bread?
“Put the jelly on.”
The jar? The bread? The table?!

The results were hilarious, but the lesson was perfect: DETAILS MATTER! ✏️ The students got to go back and revise their directions to include some important details they may have forgotten!

Such a fun, memorable way to teach our students the importance of clear, specific, and sequential writing. Way to make learning out-of-this-world! 🛸✨

🌟 Student Leadership is leveling up! 🌟

Our Student Leadership program has been revamped this year, and our 6th graders are taking on new challenges, responsibilities, and opportunities to make an impact at Smith!

Today was our very first Leadership Lab! These monthly “lunch and learn” sessions give our Student Leaders a chance to build practical leadership skills and prepare for the different roles they’ll take on throughout the year.

Today, we focused on what it means to be a strong leader and peer mentor—leading by example, building relationships, communicating with others, and helping younger students feel welcomed and supported.

Ms. Evelisse and Mrs. Mahoney will continue meeting with our leaders each month as they grow their skills and put their leadership into action! 💙💛

📚 Smith Elementary needs Book Buddy volunteers! 💙

Could you spare just ONE hour a week to make a difference for a child? If not one hour, how about 30 minutes?

Book Buddies pairs community volunteers one-on-one with our 2nd and 3rd grade readers. Volunteers work with one student for 30 minutes, helping them practice reading, build confidence, and grow into stronger readers.
...Thinking, “I’d love to help, but I wouldn’t know what to do”?

No worries at all!

New volunteers attend a training session that walks you through exactly how to support your Book Buddy. You do not have to be a teacher or reading expert—we’ll help you feel ready! 📖❤️

We are still looking for volunteers for the 2026–2027 school year, and we would LOVE to have more Book Buddies at Smith!
