Polk Central fourth graders recently saw local history come alive at Alexander’s Ford on the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. Students learned about the Overmountain Men and the Patriot militia that camped along the Green River before continuing toward the Battle of Kings Mountain.

Congratulations to the Polk County High School Marching Band on another strong competition performance.

Polk County earned second place in Class 2A at Saturday’s Cedar Cliffs Classic at A.C. Reynolds High School, including first place for color guard, and finished fourth among all 2A and 2AA bands.

The Wolverines close their competition season next Saturday at the Trojan Tournament of Bands, performing at 1 p.m.

The Polk County High School Marching Band earned second place in Class 2A on Saturday at the Cedar Cliffs Classic at A.C. Reynolds High School.

Sunny View Elementary fourth graders welcomed Rep. Jake Johnson on Friday for a lesson on the legislative process. Johnson visited with students to help them learn more about how government works and the role of elected officials.

Apple Day brought plenty of hands-on learning to Amber Styles’ kindergarten class at Polk Central Elementary.

Students explored the parts of an apple, conducted apple volcano experiments, taste-tested three varieties and even worked together to make an apple pie.

Red apples won the taste test, and there were plenty of photos to capture the learning along the way. 🍎

Fifth graders in Stephanie Uhrich’s class at Saluda Elementary took their learning beyond the classroom with a trip to the Schiele Museum in Gastonia.

Students have been reading The Birchbark House and studying how communities sustain themselves and their cultures. At the museum, they learned about the Catawba people and made connections between the novel and real history.

The trip was made possible through support from the Polk County Community Foundation.

Polk County Early College senior Bonnie Bailey is the first student taking part in Polk County Schools’ developing Future Teacher Program.

This fall, Bonnie is completing a 140-hour internship at Sunny View Elementary, gaining firsthand experience with students and educators while exploring education as a possible career.

The program is designed to help Polk County Schools “Grow Our Own” future teachers and other education professionals by giving local students meaningful experience before they graduate.

What began as hurricane relief has become weekly support for families at Polk Central and Sunny View elementary schools.

Each Tuesday, Go Easy Ministries delivers roughly 130 food bags between the two schools, filled with kid-friendly snacks and foods for students to take home. Local volunteers help prepare the bags during packing parties before school staff distribute them to participating students and families.

Thank you to Go Easy Ministries and its volunteers for continuing to support Polk County students.

What began as help for families following Hurricane Helene has become a weekly source of support for students at two Polk County elementary schools.

Congratulations to the Polk County High School Marching Band on a strong showing at the Land of the Sky competition at Enka High School.

The Wolverines earned second place overall in Class 1AA, including first place in General Effect, and finished in the top five among all 14 bands in the 1A through 2AA classifications.

Fourth graders in Angie Upton’s class at Tryon Elementary added some hands-on art to their study of Native Americans in North Carolina. Former longtime Tryon art teacher Clara Rogers returned to the school to help students create pinch pots, giving them a creative way to connect with what they have been learning in class.
