Another championship banner is coming home with Polk County FFA.

Twenty-five Polk County High School students spent a week at the North Carolina FFA Camp Program at White Lake this summer, competing as Polk White and Polk Blue while taking part in leadership activities, team building and a wide range of competitions.

Polk White captured first place, giving Polk County FFA its second consecutive camp championship and 15th banner overall.

Polk County High School FFA added another championship banner to its collection this summer, with Polk White capturing first place during the North Carolina FFA Camp Program at White Lake.

Could you give a student 30 minutes twice a month? Polk County Schools is seeking community volunteers to serve as mentors through BOLT - Building Opportunities for Leadership + Trust.

BOLT mentors meet with students twice each month at school, providing encouragement, listening and helping students build confidence, leadership skills and meaningful connections. Mentors receive training, resources and ongoing support before and during their work with students.

Polk County Middle School welcomed a group of new educators this year (and one familiar face) that includes teachers with deep Polk County roots as well as an educator beginning her first year in North Carolina.

Logan Luckadoo, Lauren Dotson, Kathryn Sushil and Jamie Graber each shared a short introduction about their backgrounds, what brought them to Polk Middle and what they’re looking forward to this year.

Every student and staff member at Polk County Early College has a new team this year.

PCEC has introduced a house system that places the school community into four groups with a focus on relationships, mentorship, leadership and school spirit. Students meet with their house mentors for 30 minutes each day, creating regular opportunities to connect with peers and trusted adults.

The goal is simple: help every student find a place to belong and people at school who are invested in their success.

Every Tryon Elementary student had a hand in creating the school’s newest piece of art - literally.

During a schoolwide artist-in-residence experience, students traced their hands and then worked hand-over-hand with visiting artist Bob Doster to cut their designs from steel using a plasma cutter. Those individual pieces became part of a large steel sculpture created for the school.

Tryon art instructor Parker Mullinax hosted the residency with Doster, giving students an opportunity to experience a new artistic process while helping create something that will remain at Tryon for years to come.

Tryon Elementary School students have created a piece of art that will remain at the school long after they move on to new classrooms and new schools.

Congratulations to Mariah McKinney, who earned first place in the local 2025-26 VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest.

Mariah submitted her artwork in March while attending Polk Central Elementary School and competed in the grades 3-5 category. Results were announced during the summer.

The annual contest, which began in 1979, recognizes young artists while encouraging patriotism through art.

Mariah McKinney, a former Polk Central Elementary School student now at Polk County Middle School, earned first place in the local 2025-26 VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest.

Four Polk County students spent part of their summer helping Sunny View Elementary get ready for the new school year.

Pixie Moore organized school supplies and curriculum books, helping reduce the supply list for families while making classroom resources easier for teachers to find.

Gage Harden, Colton Jackson and Kash Mitchell also volunteered on a Saturday, working alongside adults to help spruce up the Sunny View campus before teachers and students returned.

Building a strong school community takes families, teachers and staff working together. Polk Central Elementary’s PTO plays an important part in that effort.

The PTO supports students and employees throughout the year through field trip assistance, family events, staff appreciation activities, fundraising, spirit wear and more.

Polk Central parents who would like to become more involved this year are encouraged to connect with the PTO and find a way to participate.

For Polk Central Elementary School, building relationships with families extends beyond the classroom – and the school’s PTO plays an important role in making those connections stronger.

For more than 50 years, Ronette Dill has experienced the first day of school either as a student or an educator. Monday brought another first - and a return to Polk County Schools.

After retiring in 2024 following a 33-year career with the district, Dill is back as interim principal at Sunny View Elementary for the 2026-27 school year.

“There is something special about the beginning of a new school year,” Dill said. “It represents a fresh start, new opportunities, and the possibility of making a meaningful difference in the lives of students.”

Ronette Dill has been part of a first day of school every year since she entered first grade at T.C. Henderson Elementary School at age 6.
