If you just found out youâre pregnant and youâre already thinking about hiring a doula, no, youâre not getting ahead of yourself.
A lot of people assume hiring a doula is something to do later in pregnancy. And while you absolutely can hire a doula later, there are some pretty great reasons to start your search early.
⨠Youâll have more options.
Doulas can only take so many births each month. The earlier you start looking, the more likely you are to find someone whose personality, philosophy, availability, and approach feel like a really good fit.
⨠You get support throughout your pregnancy, not just during labor.
Questions come up long before contractions do. Provider conversations, testing decisions, birth preferences, weird pregnancy symptoms, choosing a childbirth class... having someone you can reach out to along the way is a pretty nice perk.
⨠We have connections.
Need a pelvic floor PT? Lactation support? Prenatal massage? Childbirth education? A therapist who specializes in the perinatal period? Chances are, your doula knows somebody.
⨠Thereâs more time to build a relationship.
Birth is intimate. Iâd much rather walk into your birth already knowing you, your partner, what matters to you, what helps you feel safe and supported, and what you're hoping for.
⨠You have more time to prepare.
Hiring a doula early doesn't mean spending nine months obsessing over birth. Quite the opposite. It gives us time to talk, learn, prepare, and make decisions without everything feeling rushed at the end.
So if you're 8 weeks pregnant and wondering whether it's ridiculous to contact a doula already?
Itâs not!
And if you're 32 weeks and just starting your search? Reach out anyway. Sometimes we still have room. đ
