New pGLOS publication: Greek Around the World

The Laboratory for the Study of the Greek Language is pleased to announce publication of a book featuring papers presented at the workshop on “Greek Around the World” on the occasion of International Greek Language Day, 9 February 2024. The volume is the second item in the pGLOS series (where pGLOS is an acronym standing for the “Publications of the Greek Lab at Ohio State”, but intended to summon up Greek γλώσσα) hosted by the Ohio State Knowledge Bank open-access platform.

Autumn 2026 Course — Cultural Heritage Management (ARTEDUC 5795)

The Middle East Studies Forum is pleased to announce a new course offering for Autumn 2026 that will be of strong interest to anyone engaged with Middle East and North Africa (MENA) studies: Cultural Heritage Management (ARTEDUC 5795), taught by Dr. Zülâl Fazlıoğlu Akın in the Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy. This course offers a cross-cultural, international perspective on current debates in cultural heritage, drawing on case studies from the U.S., Europe, South America, Asia, and the MENA region. Students will explore the social, cultural, political, and economic dimensions of heritage policy — including the role of UNESCO, nation-state building, memory, digital heritage, heritage diplomacy, dissonant heritage, repatriation and restitution, and illicit trafficking. The course pairs theoretical grounding with hands-on engagement through lectures, discussions, guest speakers, and individual and group projects, including a project based on Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk's novel, Museum of Innocence. The course builds a foundational knowledge of cultural heritage management and is sure to provoke rich class discussion.

Today, students from Knox County Head Start visited the CLLC as part of their International Week and took part in a French and Slovak lesson. They also had the chance to visit the Friendship Plaza pavers on High Street and the hieroglyphics in Thompson Library!

Each year the Columbus Book Festival attracts 30,000-40,000 visitors and this year, OSU's community-engage program Bigger Than Me: My Story, My Culture children's heritage books series in collaboration with the Bexley Public Library has its own tent ( #73)!
Over the last two years, with wide-ranging co-sponsorships from Bexley Public Library, Bexley Women’s Club, Ohio State’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese, College of Arts and Sciences Office of Engagement, Office Academic Affairs, Humanities Institute, Center for Languages Literatures and Cultures, OSU Libraries, Center for Ethnic Studies, and Global Arts and Humanities Discovery Themes “Archival Imaginations,” the Bigger Than Me series produced 16 books written by children and their families. The Bigger Than Me: My Story, My Culture program uses alternative pedagogies to equip participants with interdisciplinary research methods that empower children ages 7-14 and their families to tell their personal stories within broader family and cultural histories. So be sure to stop by to meet our kid authors!

The series will soon be available at various libraries including Bexley Public Library, State Library of Ohio, Ohio History Connection, Bexley Historical Society, Thompson Library (OSU), the Wawakunapaq Library in SPPO, and various area school libraries. We have display sets in various main offices around campus and Wexner Bookstore carries the paperback series for sale.

Portuguese Courses at Ohio State (AU26)

The Portuguese Program at Ohio State offers courses for students at different levels, from beginning Portuguese to courses designed for Spanish speakers and students with previous language experience. Students can learn more about PORT 1101, 1102, 1103, and Portuguese for Spanish Speakers, as well as placement options for those who already know some Portuguese. The Office of International Affairs hosts Scholar Conversation Hour every Wednesday at noon in 160 Enarson Classroom Building. It’s an informal and fun way for Ohio State’s international visiting scholars to practice their English conversation skills. Scholars can bring their lunch and connect with fellow members of the international Buckeye community for an interactive language learning experience. Scholars will engage in a variety of activities throughout the hour-long session that will help improve their English skills and hold conversations with confidence. There’s no need to register, and family and friends are welcome to join.

Gen Z embraces "bilingual breaks" for immersive travel

A trend called "bilingual breaks" is gaining favor among Generation Z, with travelers taking short trips to rural European towns to practice languages they have been studying. Research from Airbnb and Duolingo shows that Gen Z travelers are more interested in engaging with local cultures than visiting tourist hotspots, and the partnership between the two companies offers a discount to encourage this type of travel.
