Magic & Witchcraft Film Series: "Stardust"

The annual film series is back and it’s all about magic and witchcraft! This semester, we're focusing on magic and witchcraft to align with our CMRS undergraduate GE course of the same name (MedRen2666). Join us on select Wednesdays for classic films exploring the consequences of living in a world where magic can influence people’s lives. Sometimes comic, sometimes terrifying, sometimes just wildly enchanting; these films ask us to imagine “what if?” and take the resulting answers seriously. All films will be followed by a brief talk and Q+A.

This month will feature Stardust (2007). Directed by Matthew Vaughn and adapted from Neil Gaiman’s novel, Stardust follows Tristan Thorn (Charlie Cox), a young man who crosses from his quiet English village into the magical realm of Stormhold to retrieve a fallen star to win his crush's heart. Upon arrival, he discovers the star is actually a celestial woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes). Tristan must protect her from a dark witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) seeking her heart for eternal youth and a cutthroat prince (Mark Strong) vying for the throne. Guided by an eccentric airship captain (Robert De Niro), their perilous journey turns Tristan's initial mission into a genuine romance that ultimately reveals his own royal destiny.

French Center of Excellence Lecture Series: Learning to Live Inside a Novel with Laure Gouraige

French novelist Laure Gouraige will share the evolution of her writing process, from her first autobiographical texts to her current work of fiction. Laure Gouraige is the author of four novels which explore questions of identity, memory, family, and the ways fiction transforms lived experience.

Faculty and graduate students from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese’s Portuguese-Speaking World Studies program were well represented at the XVIII Congress of the Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA), held at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in Salvador, Brazil, in July 2026. BRASA’s international congress is a major gathering for scholars of Brazil, bringing together researchers from Brazil and around the world.
Professor Isis Barra Costa and doctoral students Jean Carlos Carniel and Maria Vitória de Rezende Grisi participated in the conference through book events and research presentations.
Barra Costa and Grisi took part in the inaugural Author Meets Readers, a new BRASA initiative dedicated to recently published books. The session featured Barra Costa’s Imagining the Past, Remembering the Future: Forms of Knowledge in the Afro-Brazilian Diaspora (Columbia University Press, 2026), with Grisi serving as moderator.
All three OSU participants also presented their research in different conference panels.
Grisi presented work on the continuities between medieval Andalusian poetic forms and the oral and popular traditions of Northeastern Brazil, combining literary history, translation, and digital cartography.
Carniel presented his research on Brazilian horror cinema and the ways Gothic conventions are mobilized to represent the ghosts of slavery and the persistence of historical violence in contemporary Brazil.
Barra Costa participated in a panel honoring Brazilian philosopher and scholar Denise Ferreira da Silva, whose work brings an anticolonial Black feminist perspective to questions of raciality, modern thought, ethics, and aesthetics.
Together, their contributions showcased the breadth of research in Portuguese-Speaking World Studies at Ohio State and the program’s ongoing engagement with scholars and institutions throughout Brazil.
