Many artists get so caught up in making the perfect song or set that they fail to do the basics that set them up for opportunities. Some of the basics are

1. Signing up for a performing rights organizations (BMI or ASCAP) these are the people who pay you for music being played on tv or radio.

2. Copyrighting their work. (library of congress) This protects your work and allows for you to sue if some steals your work.

You’re probably wondering why I think I can talk about music business. Well, I’ve been making money within the music industry for a little while. One of the ways I earn is through licensing my music. Anything you create can be licensed. For music there are some key things that need to happen to put yourself into position to earn with your work. One of the biggest mistakes I see creators make is not being registered to a performing rights organization or PRO. BMI and ASCAP are PROs that are free register for and they collect and distribute royalties on behalf of creators. bmi.com or ascap.com is where you can sign up. Unless you are signing up as a publisher, your account will be free.
