How to Teach Kids About Nature in Your Own Backyard 03/19/2024

Up too late, but I got it out and a podcast about it tomorrow 🤪

How to Teach Kids About Nature in Your Own Backyard You'll never regret teaching your kids about nature. You don't have to have grown up in the country or been a nature freak yourself to steer your kids towards a love of nature. Sometimes - often, I'd argue - the best place to start is in your own yard. Don't have a yard? Then a small patio, porch or...

Happy Friday ! 😂

My fave day during the winter: THROWBACK THURSDAY 🦋

A little assortment of happy that visits our suburban backyard 🦋
By planting more nectar producing [natives], I’ve increased my butterfly population by loads (scientific term 😆…. I don’t have time to properly calculate, but it’s ALOT 🙌🏼).
I’ll be sharing more ways to bring happiness in your yard in 2023! 🥳

Happy Monarch Monday! Is that a thing? Ever wonder what our monarchs are doing during the winter 🤷🏼‍♀️🥶 ❄️ Read on:

The eastern population of North America’s monarchs overwinters in the same 11 to 12 mountain areas in the States of Mexico and Michoacan from October to late March. Monarchs roost for the winter in oyamel fir forests at an elevation of 2,400 to 3,600 meters (nearly 2 miles above sea level).

So while we’re freezin’ our butts off in Ohio, our monarchs are soakin’ up the sun in Mexico 🇲🇽 🌞
And don’t forget 👉🏼 if you wanna see monarchs in your yard next year, it’s as easy as 1,2,3:
PLANT 1 species of milkweed + 2 other native nectar producing flowers in your yard, porch or patio! Easy breezy 🙌🏼

On this sunny Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, allow me to add some extra bursts of happiness!
1) African Daisy- great to grow in a pot in a sunny location. It’s not native, but allegedly attracts bees, although I’ve never seen any on my flowers. But they surely are pretty 💛
2) don’t underestimate a marigold! As a matter of fact, up until this past week, I STILL had marigolds blooming! In pots or in the ground, marigolds are the virtual and perpetual workhorse of the garden! Attracting bees and butterflies and keeping pops of color throughout your garden, you just can’t go wrong with these hardy little flowers 💛🧡
3) Blanket Flower. I was shocked how big the bunch got this year and how long the flowers lasted! These are hardy perennials, liking full sun. I’m sure you can find these and the other two flowers next spring at …. or check out their seed stock now (I just saw their post 👀)

Black and Blue Salvia is STILL in bloom! Salvias are popular with butterflies for its rich nectar and at night, moths may be a frequent visitor (and some reports that some species may like the salvia a little TOO much 😱).

Clearly, this is a GREAT addition to your butterfly garden plans for next year!

How amazing is this?! A nature education in her own backyard 🧡🖤🤍
This family - especially the mom- has been doing an AMAZING job exposing their girls to nature. They live a couple doors down from me and they’re busily planting native trees, bushes and flowers 🙌🏼. Best of all, is they’ve planted 3 varieties of milkweed to help expand the belt of milkweed we’re trying to create 😃🥳🙌🏼🧡🖤🤍
You can join us, too!

A friend found a tagged monarch! How cool is that?!

The purpose of tagging monarchs is to associate the location of original capture with the point of recovery for each butterfly. The data from these recaptures are used to determine the pathways taken by migrating monarchs, the influence of weather on the migration, the survival rate of the monarchs.

Took a trip to to chat with Christy, check out her nursery (AMAZING!) and grab MORE native plants to attract even MORE butterflies NOW and next year! What a gem of a place and you can’t get more LOCAL than in HER OWN BACKYARD!

- have you seen this place? I love that it’s a true individual doing what she loves 💚

“Flash” has been released onto a zinnia (great source of nectar!), hoping he’ll gather the strength to begin his migration to Mexico 🇲🇽.

My neigbors have joined the movement of planting native plants and providing a habitat for butterflies 🧡🖤🤍.
Her two girls, 11 & 8 have had a blast caring for a little less than a dozen monarchs and a few Black Swallowtail butterflies. This is science in action!
Education, conservation and fun? Yes, please!
