The Mid Autumn Festival (which begins this year on September 21, 2021) began during the Chinese Zhou Dynasty 510-314 BCE, was popularized during the Tang dynasty 618-907 CE, and became a festival during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE). Mooncakes a popular food eaten during the festival started during the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368 CE). Messages of rebellion against the Mongols were passed from person to person in the cakes!

The festival is now celebrated in Korea and Vietnam where it is also known as the Children's Festival.
