Happy First Day of Back to School for where I taught for 16 years. Today starts school year #5 that I tutor math online full time. It has been an amazing change of pace for me. I'm excited to teach kids from coast to coast. This year brings some new states into my mix. I currently have families who will be in Ohio, Florida, SC, Maryland, *New Jersey, *Missouri, *Wisconsin, Texas, and California.
I have students from grades 4th - 10th at the moment. There are a few families where I work with siblings. My longest running family is currently in 9th grade, and we started in 4th.

There are many methods to multiplication facts (skip counting/chunking...), but sometimes, cute sayings/songs/rhymes also help!

She used 7 groups of 8 to help her get to 8 groups of 8.

My South Carolina family had an event up by me in Ohio, literally 10 minutes away! It's been three years since I got to meet them in person, and we are still working together. The very tall 9 year old was excited to be taller than me already. (In my defense, I'm only 5'1".) So cool to get to spend years helping these families virtually and getting to meet some in person!

Tutoring Story of the Day: Working with negatives and creating story problems to match using temperature, money, depth, or games/sports. We pull a sports. Kid nails it by giving a video game example using Mario. A get another one needing to use games/sports.
Kid: "Mar..."
Me: "Nope, can't use Mario again."
Kid stops and looks at me, and with eye contact says,
Kid: "Luigi..."
Me: "NO! Nice try! Funny, but nice try."
Hahaha

You know the saying, "SQUIRREL" when you get distracted? I have a student who gets distracted sometime. We were deep into a problem, and she got that "I just thought of something else" look on her face.
Me: "Wait, no squirrel right now."
Student: "But it's a math squirrel."
Hahaha
Yes, I had her share the math connection after our problem. Cute little math squirrel. :)
