Sometimes the best way to lead is to listen.

Listen more than you lead.

When we are quick to give advice, provide answers, or tell someone what they should do, we can miss what they are actually trying to say.

Listening gives us the opportunity to understand their goals, concerns, ideas, and what truly matters to them.

For parents, educators, mentors, and leaders, this can make a meaningful difference.

Instead of asking, "How can I guide them?"

Try asking:

๐Ÿ’ญ "What are they trying to tell me?"
๐Ÿ’ญ "What matters most to them?"
๐Ÿ’ญ "What am I missing because I am thinking about my response?"

Sometimes, leadership is not about having the next answer.

It is about creating enough space for someone else to find theirs.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Some of the most important family conversations are the ones we sometimes avoid.

Money can be one of them.

When it comes to college planning, families should be able to have honest conversations about:

๐Ÿ’ฐ What can we realistically afford?
๐ŸŽ“ What are we willing to invest in education?
๐Ÿ“š What does our student actually need for their career goals?
๐Ÿซ Are there other college options that could provide a similar outcome at a different cost?
๐Ÿค What are we expecting from each other?

Talking openly about money does not have to make the college journey stressful.

In fact, honest conversations can help families make more thoughtful decisions together.

The goal is not simply to pay for college.

It is to understand the investment, the options, and the future that investment is helping create.

In this podcast clip, Susan Cornish of Pathfinders Advisors shares her perspective on having more honest family conversations around money and education.

If college conversations at your house end in a shrug, you're in very normal company.

It's usually not a motivation problem. It's a direction problem, and that one's fixable.

๐ŸŽ“ What if students explored careers before choosing a college?

For many families, the college conversation starts with:

โ€œWhich college should we choose?โ€

But there is another question worth asking first:

โ€œWhat kind of career could be the right fit for my student?โ€

Career exploration gives students an opportunity to understand their interests, strengths, and the different ways those can translate into real careers.

It can also help them explore different educational pathways before making a major financial commitment.

That exploration could include researching careers, talking with professionals, job shadowing, internships, or simply learning more about what different careers actually look like day to day.

Because a college decision becomes much clearer when a student has a better idea of where they want to go.

In this podcast clip, Susan Cornish of Pathfinders Advisors shares her perspective on exploring career possibilities and why starting with the career can change the way families approach college planning.

๐ŸŽฅ Watch the clip and ask yourself:

Has your student explored enough career possibilities before choosing their educational path?
