Want a Higher ACT Score? Try These 6 Smart Test-Taking Tips

The ACT can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. With the right tools and mindset, you can boost your score and head into test day feeling confident.

Here are six tips to help you succeed:

Know the Format
Get familiar with the structure: English (45 min), Math (60 min), Reading (35 min), Science (35 min), and the optional Writing section. Understanding the timing and question types will help you pace yourself and reduce stress.

Master Time Management
Don’t get stuck on one hard question. Keep moving, then circle back if there’s time. Set a time limit per question to make sure you finish each section.

Practice Under Real Conditions
Take full-length, timed practice tests. It helps with pacing, builds stamina, and gets you comfortable with the test format. The more you practice, the less anxious you’ll feel.

Use the Process of Elimination
Unsure of the answer? Cross off the obviously wrong choices. Narrowing your options increases the odds of guessing correctly—and builds confidence.

Take Care of Your Body and Mind
Get 8 hours of sleep the night before and eat a good breakfast. Practice breathing techniques to stay calm and focused during the test.

Stay Positive and Confident
Believe in your preparation. Replace negative thoughts with encouraging ones. Trust yourself—you’ve got this!

At Career Prep High School, we support students with ACT prep and one-on-one guidance to help you succeed. Read more at https://careerprepschool.org/blog/act-test-taking-tips.
