OASIS is the third in a series of performance and technology works created by Professor Norah Zuniga Shaw for Livable Futures. The creative team includes Byron Au Yong, internationally renowned contemporary artist who has composed an improvised song-cycle for OASIS drawing on his experience in Chinese and Korean vocal traditions and Zuniga Shaw’s background in North American folk music and Jewish ritual practices. The work responds directly to grief and loss associated with the pandemic and climate crisis and the need for both recovery and transformative change.

Resisting dominant narratives of disaster and decline, it offers a soft space for turning to toward the issues at hand. Participants are bathed in sound, stars, stories, and sensation in this 90-minute immersive experience for rest and recovery in uncertain times. Warm water flows through the themes of the work but so does mirage and the impermanence and precarity of any site of refuge on the planet today. The literal and figurative metaphors of physical and emotional oases provide fertile ground for the imagination.

*PAST RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT* "When I Am Little Again" was a collaboration between Kareen Balsam, a graduate student in Dance and Technology, and Vita Berezina-Blackburn, an Art and Technology graduate. When I am Little Again pieces together a fractured family history expressed in dance, video and motion capture based animation. The piece can be presented as a short film, and also as a virtual memorial - a looping installation where live dance is combined with projected media.

*THROWBACK* In April of 2019 Dr. Ching-Chun Lai, professional orchestral conductor, participated in a motion capture session at ACCAD. Dr. Lai was a visiting professor in music an associate professor at the Crane School of Music, State University of New York at Potsdam. This was the first time ACCAD has captured the movement of a professional conductor. ACCAD staff member, Vita Berezina-Blackburn explained, 'the research and collaboration potential of this rare opportunity is a chance to visualize gestural communications between the conductor and the musicians. This sheds light on the unique language crafted by a conductor to communicate the nuances of a composition and is of great value to both student conductors and music lovers.'"
