Congratulations to Capital University Law School alumnus Sean Walton Jr. (L'11) on being named Mahogany Columbus’ 2026 Man of the Year!

A trial lawyer, community leader and champion for justice, Sean continues to make a meaningful impact both in the courtroom and throughout Columbus. Sean was also the 2025 recipient of Capital University Law School's David D. White award. Professor Nathaniel Fouch filed an amicus brief in the Ohio Supreme Court and was granted the opportunity to share time with counsel for the defendant at oral argument before the court this summer. He argued that the Ohio Constitution is more protective of defendants' jury trial rights than the U.S. Constitution as interpreted by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Specifically, Ohio has a long history of requiring an indictment to contain an allegation of every fact legally essential to the punishment to be inflicted—even the fact of a prior conviction or juvenile adjudication—and these must be proved to a jury before a judge may impose punishment.

This was Professor Fouch’s second amicus brief with the court this year. A decision in both cases is expected this fall.

Last night, new students took their first steps into a profession built on purpose, service and the pursuit of justice.

At their Welcome Assembly, the entering class of 2026 took the Oath of Professionalism, marking not only the beginning of their legal education, but the beginning of their responsibility to the communities and people they will one day serve.

We were honored to hear from two Capital Law alumni who embody that responsibility: Lindsay Ford Ellis, L’07, Senior Attorney, Global Compliance at Bath & Body Works, and The Honorable Ajmeri Hoque, L’10, Franklin County Municipal Court.

Thank you both for sharing your wisdom, experiences and encouragement with the next generation of Capital University lawyers.

⚖️ Externship Spotlight: Brian Hart, Rising 2L

At Capital Law, learning extends far beyond the classroom. Through externships, our students gain hands-on experience, build professional connections and discover where their legal education can take them.

This summer, rising 2L Brian Hart worked with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office in Louisville, Kentucky, where he gained firsthand experience in criminal prosecution. Brian analyzed discovery, including interviews, interrogations and body camera footage, conducted legal research, helped prepare cases and attended trials, including a high-profile murder trial that resulted in two guilty verdicts.

One of Brian’s most meaningful experiences came while working on a homicide case. His research and analysis contributed to case preparation, and he had the opportunity to speak with the victim’s family about the case. The experience gave him a deeper understanding of the responsibility prosecutors carry, not only to pursue justice, but to serve victims, families and the broader community.

The summer affirmed Brian’s passion for criminal law and his goal of becoming a prosecutor. “This summer has been a life-changing experience and has affirmed my desire to pursue a career in the criminal sphere of law, specifically prosecution," he shared.
